Happy Easter Weekend To All!!!!!!

posted on 04/11/2009
Good morning to all my fishing pals!!!!

I wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Easter weekend, and hope everyone finds a little joy in sharing the day with family and friends, as I know I will. Mom, wish you were with us, we all miss you; please give our best to Grandma and Grandpa and the rest of the family.

Well I know that I said I was going fishing yesterday, but unfortunately, I was unable to make it out…very depressing. The only plus that I could get out of it was, the Wigwam Resort was starting to field the phone calls instead of make them…love it when that happens. That is a major plus and I would sacrifice my day on the water to put together some vacation trips for some enthusiastic anglers any day of the week…even though I was really looking forward to it. But, I guess that’s why I live up here, if I can’t do it today, I can do it tomorrow.

I have been hearing from our customers and the local talent that the fish are heavy in Four Mile Bay and right at the mouth of Rainy River. There have been a number of anglers that have been making the trip down to the Birchdale area on Rainy River and they are not seeing the same results…I guess the water is still a bit muddy down that way. I have been saying to myself that I hope the water clear up for the Sturgeon Excursion on April 24th, 25th and 26th…I’m sure it will.

I will keep saying this everyday until it is here, but I CAN’T WAIT TILL MAY 8TH! I am really looking forward to this summer of fishing. I have recently moved back to northern Minnesota to put my roots back deep in the ground to be closer to family and some old fishing buddies, that I would only see when I’d come home fishing a couple weeks out of each summer. For all of you that have siblings I know you will understand my next statement; I can’t wait to fish with my little brother, as much as humanly possible this summer…it’s great to be home.

Being raised in International Falls, MN by a bad to the bone, but yet, loving ex-marine, my childhood was filled with outdoor activities that I wasn’t being able to experience on a regular basis, back in Michigan. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Michigan with its northern Minnesota like landscape, but nothing I have found to date replaces the real thing. Needless to say, that’s why I have come back to “the promise land” (my old hockey buddies will get that one). In my short life I’ve been able to live a very fulfilling life, but I always knew there was something missing and as the old saying goes, you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy…it hits home for me.

My shout out today will go to my little brother Ryan…thanks for the dinner last night, it was awesome, I can’t wait to go fishing little buddy. Enough said.

Well take care and again I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter weekend. I will be back reporting on Monday. Happy Fishing to all, and to all a good day!

Boats are in Four Mile Bay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

posted on 04/10/2009
Good morning to all my fishing pals!!!!

Well today it is time to do a little bit of fishing on Rainy River and Four Mile Bay. As I rounded the corner at Wheelers Point going to work (I don’t know if I can even call this work), I could see a few boats heading to open water in the bay and my heart started pumping as much as it did when I scored my first professional goal (what a feeling). It has been a very long winter for us in northern Minnesota, and as much as I love to ice fish, I love to fish in the summer even more. Be sure to catch tomorrow’s edition to get all of the juicy details.

The Wigwam Resort will be lodging and feeding all the gentlemen that are coming up for the Sturgeon Excursion, put on by my friends at IDO Fishing and I can’t wait till they get up here…the event will be held on April 24th, 25th & 26th. For all of you whom love to Sturgeon fish, or would love to experience it for the fist time, please look into it…it is a real treat. I will have some more information on this come next week if anyone is interested. The resort is almost completely booked…I think we have two lodging rooms left, so if you’re interested, please call and book immediately.

On a Wigwam website update…we are almost there. I am anticipating having it complete, hopefully by the Sturgeon Excursion (April 24th). There are a few changes that have to be made and as they say at NASA...“We are ready for lift off”. I can’t wait to share this with all fishing enthusiasts across America.

My shout out today goes to my brother-in-law whom just lost his father this week. We are with you big guy and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time…God Bless.

Thanks for reading and Happy Fishing to all my fishing pals.

Spring Walleye Fishing on Lake of the Woods

posted on 04/09/2009
Good morning all my fishing pals!!!!

More and more of Four Mile Bay is beginning to open up, but not as quickly as I anticipated, or want it to. We need some warm weather to open this baby up and I think were going to get it this weekend. I know in yesterdays edition I talked about the massive Sturgeon that we are going to be catching this year, but don’t forget about those huge Walleyes (I know you wouldn’t do that).

I have been hearing from my pals on the lake, that right in the gap and Four Mile Bay, they have been catching some nice Walleye, 17” – 32”, on a regular basis now. Even though they are brave enough to still go on the ice, I’m not, so I’ll let them catch them for now and tell me about it. I am eagerly anticipating May 8th, to be able to get out there with my boat…I just don’t recommend going out on the ice right now…it’s enter at your own risk.

I have had some e-mails about what will be included in my daily fishing report and I don’t want to spill the beans, but you won’t be disappointed. I will be collecting information from all of our guides and the local talent on a daily basis and be giving every angler the best possible chance to be “put on the fish”. Then it will be up to you to do the rest. I am an angler that still believes in presentation, but it doesn’t hurt to know what they are biting on (lure), bait, how aggressively and vicinity. I hope that this helps every reader experience a great time on Lake of the Woods, every time.

Finally, I just wanted to give a shout out to a great guy I just met over the weekend, while playing in an alumni hockey game with my old Penguins team in PA. For you that have seen the movie “Slap Shot”, you will be familiar with the phrase, “We want the Hanson’s”. They are all fellow Minnesotans and will always have a place in my boat. I hope to see you a couple times this summer when you’re passing through, and as I told you, we will catch a lot of fish and tell a lot of great stories, fishing and hockey.

Well, take care to all my fishing pals, and best of luck fishing.

Spring Fishing is Here on Four Mile Bay and Rainy River!!!!

posted on 04/08/2009
Good morning to all my fishing pals!

As I rounded the corner this morning at Wheelers Point (on my way to the best job in the world), I could see the river glistening, as the sun rose from the east; the ice is dissipating at a very quick rate. I anticipate Four Mile Bay to be completely open by Friday. We all know what that means...Sturgeon fishing!

Sturgeon is one of my favorite fish to catch in the bay and on Rainy River in the spring. If you haven't experience it...here's your opportunity. Over the years we have pulled up some monsters. The big catch of the year, last year, was by the owner of the Wigwam Resort (Tom Briggs), his Sturgeon weighed in at 96 lbs. Sturgeon will fight like a marlin, so where I'm going with this one is, you don't have to go to Cabo San Lucas Mexico, to fight a giant…you can come right down in front of the Wigwam Resort to experience that this year. You will most definitely have fun and keep a little more money in the pocket book at the same time.

You will hear me talk a lot about not having to use your passport this summer, because it's true. Come visit us at the Wigwam Resort and get a taste of the best fishing in America (in the world is my opinion, but it’s only mine). No matter what type of fresh water species you like to catch, there is always an excellent possibility to catch them on Lake of the Woods.

Keep reading my blog and find out where the fish are at this summer...I can’t wait to put you on the fish. Happy fishing to all!
