Don't be afraid to stand out from the pack

posted on 05/04/2010
Most of us who take our fishing seriously try to learn as much as possible about new techniques, the hot new bait, and the proper way to present our lure to the fish. The fact of the matter is, I believe the "average" fisherman is getting much better. Today's technology enables anyone to zero in on the hot spot and find that secret reef or rock pile.

So if more and more people are finding these spots, how do we set ourself apart? Consider this:

Thanks to catch & release and slot limits, a typical smallmouth bass might get caught well over a dozen times in its life. Over time, this fish is going to "wise-up" to the typical presentations. It's important to seperate yourself from the pack by using things like scent attractents and different size baits. This year I caught my biggest walleye, 11.5 lbs, on a huge ringworm and spinner combo. The rest of the boats were using your typical jig & minnow. Don't get me wrong, they caught fish but we seemed to catch the bigger ones by standing out. The next eye was 10.5 lbs and she came on a 4" paddletail that I normally use for bass.

So don't be afraid to stand out from the pack this year. Try something new and maybe you'll stumble onto the next hot thing.
