Two nice trophies this week
Summer like weather and trophy walleyes, it sounds like July? We will take it!
Paul from Esko, MN had great success while fishing at Sportsmans last week. 32 inch and a 31 inch walleye within two days! Plus he said he caught and released many other nice slot size fish between nineteen and a half and twenty-nine inches and good eater fish between fourteen and nineteen inches too during his three day trip.
Successful fishing is what it is all about this year on Lake of the Woods. Since mid May, 95% of our groups have had excellent fishing success and either ate or left with their limit of walleyes. Is their an end in sight? I dont think so, the DNR is reporting they have seen some of the best net reports in years. The lake is healthier in than ever. Time to book your winter trip! Not much has changed from last week with temperatures still staying in the warm 70s and 80s. Areas around Zippel Bay and Long Point continue to be producing the best walleyes and saugers lately. Twenty-five to thirty feet of water jigging with gold, glow in the dark, pink or orange jigs tipped with a minnow or trolling with shad raps silver and red or white and red have been the best presentations. A look ahead to the cooler temperatures we will start to see the fish migrate towards the Lighthouse Gap and Rainy River, stay tuned.
Annual Emerald Shiner Run
Another week of warm temperatures has slowed the Shiner Run. We will keep you informed, check back early next week for an update. It did dip down to forty degrees last night and it looks like we may start to see fall like temperatures with daytime highs forecasted in the fifties and sixties next week. Cool temperatures are what the Shiners are looking for.
One week left to catch and keep a sturgeon until April! The Rainy River and Four Mile bay of Lake of the Woods are the best areas to snag one of these prehistoric monsters.
Sharp tailed Grouse
Local hunters say they did get some birds this week, but the best hunting is yet to come. If we get the cooler temperatures they are forecasting for next week the leaves will really start to fall and it will be easier to spot the birds. Come and explore the Beltrami Island State Forest right out of our back door! Over 66,000 acres to explore! www.dnr.state.mn.us
