Lake of the Woods Small Mouth Bass Fishing is…Off the HOOK!!!!

posted on 07/21/2009
Good morning to all!

Welcome to another edition of the Wigwam Fisherman’s Blog. Today Tom Briggs and I were able to get away from the resort to try our hand at Lake of the Woods Small Mouth Bass fishing and we weren’t disappointed. We went up about 6 miles north right on the US/Canadian Border for just a couple hours. As we started to pull our spinner baits and crank baits over the rocks the excitement began. As soon as we found the fish it was one right after the other. Tom Briggs can put you on the fish…I am reminded of that every day! As we were pulling in the Small Mouth, we stumbled upon a couple nice Walleyes, which just put a great big cherry on top for the day. I love Lake of the Woods and everything it has to offer. If you haven’t fished our amazing fishery this summer, what are you waiting for? The fishing is off the HOOK!!!!

Once again, before I go into the fishing report, I just wanted to take a second and go over all the different species of fish that we have caught this year in Lake of the Woods. I know that we are known to be the Walleye Capitol of the World, here in Baudette, MN on Lake of the Woods, but we have many different species of fish that are being caught out of Lake of the Woods that should get there day in the lime light. We have caught Monster Lake Trout, Musky, Northern Pike, Perch, Sauger, Small Mouth Bass, Sturgeon and Walleye this summer. So if you’re looking to be put on some different species of fish this summer other than Walleye, don’t hesitate to give us a call at the World Famous Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods and let us, PUT YOU ON THE FISH!!!!

Daily Fishing Report: Tonight we will have some isolated thunderstorms this evening, then skies turning partly cloudy after midnight, low 53F with winds SW at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 30% chance of rain. Tomorrow we will have intervals of clouds and sunshine. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible, high around 75F with winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow night we will see partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of a shower through the evening, low 54F with winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Again today’s fishing report will come from me and our guides (Tom Briggs, Billy Kloos and Kevin Olmstead). Little Oak Island is smoking hot right now…if you can get up there, you will catch fish. I and Jake Magness went there on Sunday and had our limit of 19” Walleyes in less than 30 minutes. We were using hammered gold spinners with crawlers as bait. When fishing up at Little Oak Island, you will want to be on either the east or west side in about 13 to 18 feet of water. Zipple Bay is also producing some Monster Walleyes right now also. Last week, Tom and I went to Zipple in 29 and 23 feet of water, even in the wind and rain, and we were still catching fish. We were having the best success with Lime Green/Chartreuse Jigs with Frozen Shiners as Bait. Because of the wind and rain this great fishing might not continue for the next few days until the water clears up…whenever we get these high winds the fish usually slow with their bite. After the water clears in the next few days we should continue the great bite we’ve been having this summer. Also, when the wind dissipates keep Morris Point in front of the washout and the west side of Pine Island the fish are still biting like crazy on the hammered gold spinners and crawlers. Tom and Billy have been heading out into the big water in about 32 to 36 feet of water in the mud and anchoring and jigging. Their approximate location is about 5 miles north of Long Point towards Garden Island and approximately 7 miles north of Morris Point. They have been having success using Pink/Gold, Chartreuse/Orange and Chartreuse/Pink Jigs with frozen shiners as bait. This past weekend Tom went to this area and caught 9 Walleyes over 26”…WOW!!!! Don’t miss out on this great fishing that we’re having on Lake of the Woods…come visit us today at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods!

Today my “shout out” will go out to two of the Wigwam Resort Guests that I will have the opportunity to take out guiding tomorrow…the Webers (from Orlando, FL and Atlanta, GA). I am looking forward to taking these gentlemen out tomorrow morning. They are both gourmet chefs (one Italian and one French) and I had to cook them steak last night…it was a great opportunity for me to see how my cooking skills are. Surprisingly they gave the thumbs up, but I think they were just being generous. I hope that during their stay with us they have an absolutely fabulous time and I can’t wait to take them fishing tomorrow. I just wanted to personally thank them for being our guests, and I hope they will be longtime guests of the World Famous Wigwam Resort for years to come.

Happy Fishing to all, and to all a good day!
