Another good night fishing resulted in 9 crappies between Jeff and I. We headed out around 5:30 pm and came in at 8pm as again it was a little chilly out there

Man... that sounds like fun. When I was a kid, I used to live in Goodridge (by Thief River Falls) and my dad used to take us fishing up that way.

How's the ice up there, anyway?

There is some open water on the north east end but still quite a bit of ice.

At this time the lake looks ice free ? There may be ice in the distance but you can not see it at this time without flying over.

Wow what can I say upper red lake was the place to catch walleye even though we had a blizzard on saturday the fishing was fantastic. If you did not catch walleye on saturday or sunday you did not have a line in the water.

Walleye's were biting and the crappies were being caught like crazy. One group at Westwind had over 90. Will they be killing the future crappie fishing by taking all those spawning fish?

I guess the only way around that is to never harvest any crappie or take less? What the difference when you take them winter or spring? They still will never spawn once there removed. One difference is they are more vulnerable this time of year so if they stop you from harvesting during the spring it may be harder to catch 90 later on?
