I think I have found out what has been rutting the hell out of one of my spots in my deer country. A couple bull moose! The trail cam caught both of them at this spot. One is a very nice bull, looks to be about 40 inches or so. The other is a one horned bull. I have a great pic of the nice bull and a bad pic in the rain of the other. And zero pics of any deer...lol.

We were up there this weekend. Lots of fresh tracks in the snow, about 3 inches. So scouting was pretty easy. Although, they will be changing their habits over the next couple weeks. And the big bucks have been out cruising for does already. Their tracks were easy to see!

We also have a few wolves up there. The pack looks to only be 4 right now. 2 adults, and 2 young ones. And they have been hunting hard throughout our area. The big one has seriously big tracks! My wife's eyes were pretty big! And she got a lot more snuggly out on the trails after seeing those! smile smiley

And a couple more grouse are headed for some wild rice soup!

I'll be hitting the woods the next 2 days. The wind direction looks to be perfect for my favorite stand. Looks like it might be a bit windy though and warm, not super excited about that. Either way I'll be out there hoping to get lucky.

Hunted Thursday and Friday this last week. Had weekend plans so had to head home early Saturday morning.

Thursday was a good day in the stand. In the morning sit I had 3 does come through. 2 stayed just out of range and the 3rd came in to about 12 yards. It was walking a straight line toward a nice large shooting lane so I was standing with release clipped on waiting for it to walk behind a few trees where I could draw my bow before it walked into the shooting lane. However, instead of staying on that line it made a hard left turn and started walking right at me. At 12 yards it made another left turn and got broadside but I only have 2-3 seconds to get my bow drawn, aim, and shoot. Needless to say it didnt happen. After sitting in the cold that morning (upper 20's) my muscles were a bit stiff and I didn't get the quick easy draw I wanted so I missed my window. It trotted off into the thick stuff clueless that her she saved her own life with that left turn.

During the afternoon sit I had 2 bucks come through right at 20 yards and right through my primary shooting lanes. Lucky for them I am hunting an earn a buck area so I need to get a doe down first before the bucks are fair game. The small one was a fork and the bigger one was a small 8. The fork would have been safe either way I'm still undecided on the 8 but feel ok that he got a pass.

Friday was a wind fest. I was blown around in my tree all day with nothing for deer movement. I climbed down an hour early to use the time for a bit of scouting. I went and checked on the trespassers stand and it has not been used in the prior 2-3 weeks since I'd last checked it. The scrapes have not been tended to real heavily but rubs are showing up.

I took a short hike over to the northern property I have access to in order to find an old stand and trail cam my buddy told me he found last season. I made me way over there and found the stand (its old and beaten up) also found the camera. Batteries were dead and it head been there awhile so I grabbed it and brought it back with me to check out the chip. When I looked at the chip the last photos were from 2 years ago so I'm assuming its abandoned at this point. Based on the pictures I assume he had been baiting to some degree because there were photos of multiple deer with heads down feeding right in front of the camera. There were 2 bucks of note on the cam. One was a very large mature buck that went maybe 12 points maybe more with some kickers. Real tall nice rack and huge neck from the rut. That photo was from Nov 2015. Another photo from July of 2016 showed a large wide racked 10 pointer in velvet. Judging by the body and face it was a real young deer in that pic. Funny part is that my uncle pulled the chip in his trail camera on Friday night and that big 10 pointer showed up again 2 weeks ago on my uncles property. Still the same exact rack shape but bigger now. That deer has to be 4-5 years old now and he's still out there.

I'll try to add the trail cam photos once I had a chance to download them.

Not sure when i'm going to get back out there but I'm working on it. My wife has a international work trip coming up starting the first weekend in November so it looks like i'll be on kid duty during the peak of the rut.

The trials and tribulations of bow hunting! Sounds productive!

We cleared 3 mores tree stands and worked a few more trails. The cub cadet challenger is proving to be worth its weight in gold!!!

These are just photos of a screen since I haven't had time to download the actual images yet but you get the idea.

First one is from 3 years ago, I'm sure this brute is long gone but nice to see the potential the deer in the area have.

The velvet buck is from July 2016, body and face appear to make him a pretty young deer in this photo.

This one was taken Sept 30th of this year at 8pm. Looks to be the same deer as the velvet buck just bigger. I'd guess he's at least 4-5 years old now.

Looks like I won't be getting back out until December. My entire month of November is tied up with various other responsibilities. Tough deal missing the rut but hopefully I can get it done late season.

Looks like RUT is in full swing! Woods is ripped up! Deer getting pasted on the roads left and right. Careful driving out there.
