The season continues with its twists and turns. I just checked a bait that I had completely gave up on. Totally cleaned out! So I think I'm going to rebait again and see what happens. The bears don't seem to be roaming far and wide right now, so if they are near they should be back. Keep ya posted.....
The season wrapped up for me without a bear. I had to throw in the towel before the final days because of my Wyoming trip. But the reality was that I wasn't going to get one this year for many reasons. But that's why we call it hunting.
The DNR issued far fewer licenses in the quota area this year to help with hunter success and reduce the number of bears harvested to improve their numbers in the future. They achieved both goals I believe. The preliminary number is only 1856 bears harvested! It hasn't been that low since the 1980's.
An interesting side effect to the reduction in quota licenses was that we had more desperate hunters actually hunting in the non-quota area that I like to hunt and this actually reduced the success rate in our area. Along with the massive acorn crop. There were just too many options for the bears!
This is simply a result of how popular black bear hunting is becoming here in MN. But I'm OK with that. It's just not realistic to expect to have a banner year every year. And we will just appreciate our successes that much more in the future. Needless to say, but I'm already thinking of strategies for next year!
