Its just never as easy as it seems Dave.. You have a weekend or two before the deer and bird hunters arrive.

Yep, I know this bear hunting thing is not easy. A lot of people frown on it because of the baiting thing. They think it's a turkey shoot or something. Tell that to the bears. I'm pretty sure they didn't read the "how to book" on being shot by a hunter.

We went back up on Sunday evening. We both saw bears. My son had two 4 footers (sub-adults still with mom) show up. They were too small yet, and mom didn't make an appearance. She circled the bait and let her presence be known, but didn't make a mistake.

I had a huge monster come in! He was pushing 7ft long, and from the front across the shoulders and arms he had to pushing 3.5-4ft wide. He looked like an Alaskan bear. He didn't like something and left quickly with no shot for my string and stick. Made me wish I had a gun! We have some real poor trailcam photos of this guy. You can "bearly" make out his outline, and he is as big as advertised. Once again, he didn't read the how to manual either. But I will be back and try to help him out with some "tutoring" on the subject.

As usual, the bear hunting has seen it's fair share of challenges this year. We have gone 1 for 3, we have all seen bears, and had shooting opportunities. Either too small or bad angles with a bow. I would call it a pretty good year, compared to most. In talking to other hunters, I believe they feel the same way. The challenges being, active logging, and wolves, and surprisingly not other bear hunters.
My conclusions for this year are;
1. Use meat to get your baits started, but back off to fruits and sweets as soon as they get hit if in wolf country. It seems once the wolves find the bait with meat, their presence is "keeping" the bears away.
2. Understanding how hungry the bears are, and don't over feed them. This is tough. We definitely had a gap in natural foods this early fall, making the bears hungry. So they hit the baits hard early and then backed off after replentishing their fat stores for the winter. Since foods were plentiful all summer long, they were pretty well fed until fall and were not totally desperate to fatten up to survive the winter. During really dry summers, you would have to scare the bears off the baits, just to bait them. We didn't see that this year even though the baits were getting hit really hard. Maybe we over fed them early on.
3. Two of our baits got ruined by logging activities. Maybe this is just bad luck. But next time, I will be sure to be checking on start times of local loggers before I invest in the time, energy, and cost of baiting.
We will be eating some tasty bear meat this fall. Can't wait for the stews to be ready.

Great advice Dave. Maybe when some of my kid activities slow down I can get back into bear hunting. It sure is more work than a person can imagine!
