Thanks for the insight Pier!! I figured I would start with Channels for the reason, I can find them in nearby lakes and because they are a bit smaller since I don't really have the set up right now to be hauling in Flatheads like the one picture WebDude threw up of you catching. I figured I would start simple, and I will hopefully get out next week and try my luck. I appreciate everyone providing insight and tips to help out a Catfish noob (myself).
Your the man pier, If you ever want some company let me know. I would love to see the kind of places you fish and learn from you. The catfishing thing is really interesting to me. I haven't had a lot of success yet but I'm trying.
My main problem is finding spots. But that'll come with time I suppose.
I feel like finding good spots without a boat is soo hard!! In a boat I can troll around and seem to eventually stumble on some fish but on foot or by car, I find it so hard. I tried out 3 new areas today (2 new lakes and 1 creek) and didn't have very much luck! It's frustrating...
So I just got home from my first Catfishing adventure. I went out to Island lake and I got skunked. Which I assumed would happen since I felt pretty out of element fishing for cats (I just have no knowledge or experience with them). I rigged up my reel with 14 lb test and put an egg sinker above a barrel swivel which I tied on with a polamer knot. Then I tied on about 2 feet of 12 lb test to my barrel swivel with an improved clinch knot. I then snelled my 3/0 black circle hook onto my leader. I decided to start out simple and I used nightcrawlers as my bait. It seemed to be pretty rocky in the areas where I was casting. I was fishing in a lake so I know that my egg sinker was enough to hold my bait to the bottom (is that what you want, your bait on the bottom or do you want it floating a bit off the bottom?). I felt a bunch of little taps on almost all my casts from what I'm assuming were panfish. Most of the time I would reel up, I would have some weeds on my sinker and hook. I only fished for like 3 hours (should I be more patient?)and like I said I didn't have any bites that were more than taps. I'm putting this up to hopefully get some constructive criticism in things I was doing wrong or should be doing differently. I have read cutbait works the best, but what is the process for doing that? Someone help me.
