Now folks... let's think about this. Ice asked who was coming and a few replied that they were but a lot more said they had other commitments. That's just the way it is. I spent the weekend at a hockey tournament with my kid. I had a great time, but I would have liked to have gone fishing too. But to tell you the truth, family, for me, has to come first. When I get a bit older, I'll probably be able to make it out fishing a bit more, it's just not in the cards right now. I suppose for a person that spends every day out on the ice, it might be a let down, but to a lot of us, just spending a day out on the ice is a real treat. Last year, I went ice fishing probably 4 times. That's the best I could do. I have 4 kids and between basketball, hockey, baseball, football, soccer, piano, band, dance (not to mention that I work 10 to 12 hours a day and I am considered a full time student (getting a bachelor degree in computer science)), AND the fact that I just moved in to a new house I built and am trying to sell the old one... AND it is just before Christmas... it makes it a bit hard to plan just about anything!

A little understanding from some of the members would be a good thing. Users on these forums have tried these get-togethers before and most of the time 5 or 10 people will show up. I would have liked to have made each of them, but in reality, I didn't. I don't think it's a bad reflection on the users or me here, nor do I think the users should abandon trying to do these again, but keep in mind, these get-togthers are not really organized events with prizes, money, food or pig roast, tickets, tournament, payouts, ya da ya da yada, etc... it's just some people getting together to go fishing. And the main point is that being out there and going fishing IS the prize!!!

I really envy the users who can spend so much time fishing. I also envy the people out there who can make a living at it. But in reality, there are very few people who can make a living by fishing, and those that do, at some point, make a realization that the money they make are from people like me. People who don't have time, but are willing to pay someone for their expertise, or products, to be able to be successful when they actually do have time to get out. So, was it a bust? What exactly is the definition of a bust? Do you mean that their weren't hundreds of people out on the ice with kegs of beer and grills going? Do you mean that their weren't any fish caught? To me, and I bet, to a lot of users on this site, just being out fishing is reward enough. Feel lucky that you have the ability to spend as much time as you do fishing. I sure wish I could. But also realize that there are a lot of people out there where fishing is a hobby and they just go when they can. Anyway... that's the way it is.

Another thing... I called several of the users here who are good friends of mine and asked if they were going. All of them said no. Why? I am not sure, but one of them who is a well respected guide up in the BWCA told me that the last thing he wanted to do was be out on the ice with a crowd of people ice fishing. He would rather be on a lake with no others around - with just himself or himself and a client. You see, a lot of people fish to get away from the crowd. They don't fish to be in one. Fishing, to some, is a way to get away, relax with a few good friends or a son or daughter. So you can't fault people who look at fishing different then you do. If you like to hang out with a lot of people, fish the tournaments, go to all the sports shows, that is one way of enjoying fishing. But if you like to go fishing to relax, commune with nature, be where there is no noise or others, that is another way to enjoy fishing too. You can't fault people for that... it's just 2 different philosophies.

This post is not intended to single anyone out. Nor is it intended to make anyone feel bad. Just try to realize that the reason this site is here is to have fun and to share. I built this thing to try to appeal to anyone who likes to fish, whether you look at it as an opportunity or as a diversion is up to you. There are many different people out there and many varying philosophies on how to spend our time. I would like this site to appeal to all of them.

I completely agree with you WebDude. Your philosophy and the philosophy of many of the users for this site is what makes this such a great place to visit. Read the mission statement... and keep up the good work!

The timing is never wrong for everyone !! Even in this event some came out and from what I read and see it was a great time that will be remember for a very long time, so lets make sure we concentrate on that -- the good times !!

As stated earlier - some events are big things prizes - spokes peoeple - big money and such -- if you are into that you can find at least two other ice fishing sites the make a big deal out of huge get togethers. Seems a lot of you at this site are not into that.

What I would love to see is -- when someone is going out and has an extra seat or spot to let others know -what a great time that would be !! This summer I picked up a great boat and it will have an extra seat a good deal of the time -- believe me -- I love to have company when I fish -- not to big on solo fishing most of the time.

Ice fishing is even better -- you dont need an extra seat -- just let someone know you are going out and if you want company - let others know.

So Ice Man -- sounds like you had a great time !!

Hope everyone gets what they want for Christmas !!

In the thread titles "Pondering a get together" there was talk about not many people being able to come and this was a few weeks ago. I know I mentioned that this is not a good time of year for me to be able to make more plans, and it was mentioned that January would probably be better.

From all the talk it sounded pretty obvious that most people had prior commitments that couldn't be avoided.

I can't believe it was that big of a surprise that it was a small gathering.

CK, We all appreciate all the effort and enthusiasim you put into this site and fishing in general. You truly are the lucky one who can fish all the time. If I tried to do that I would be shopping for a new wife.

Ice,

I made it clear in a past post that I would not be able to make it. I cannot speak for other users. If they said they would be there and did not show up, I have no control over that.

From the looks of the pics, some ice was lost over the past week (houses moved to shore). It also looks like skates would have been better than boots. Could have held several hockey games on the lake while wetting a line at the same time. lol I heard that the bite was as tight as on the 10th, a little more action, but not much.

Money is tight with x-mas gifts to buy. We single parents have to make sacrafices. Not all of us live within 10 mile of our favorits honey hole or get to drive our ATV to work. Early in the week things were looking good and then a couple of unexpected bill later and plans needed to change. I did only learn about this on the day I signed up.

Don't give up just because only a few showed up. They will be the ones to show the next time and will bring friends. Word will spread and the next time there will be a couple more and then more the next and so on, until we end up having to share holes (in the ice, get your thoughts out of the gutter blush smiley)
