I always have the itch but life has changed a lot for me over the years as well. I joined this site 12 years ago, back then it was just me and the wife living in an apartment. Now I've got 2 kids, house, dog, and have changed jobs 4-5 times.
All of that adds up to so much less free time. All of my fishing trips have been focused on the kids. So far my oldest loves to go fishing with me. I took her down to my old spot at minnehaha creek and the mississippi river a week or so ago for the first time. She loved it and caught a large mouth and a decent crappie on her little kiddie pole. Those 2 fish meant more to me than almost any other I've caught myself.
I have no plans for opener fishing as both kids bdays are right around that time along with mothers day. But I'll still make sure to get the kids out fishing as much as possible.
I have the itch, just not on the opener. I'll let everyone else fish the weekend. Living on the lake I can wait until a few days later when the fish aren't so spooked from all the boat traffic and everything in the tackle world being thrown at them. That also depends on the weather. Don't need to brush wet slushy snow off of my boat seat to go fishing at my age. Spent enough times doing that since the 50's until now. Used to spend opener in my younger years up on Winny or Leech.
Even eminent chartered accountants are known, in their capacity as fishermen, blissfully to ignore differences between seven and ten inches, half a pound and two pounds, three fish and a dozen fish. ~ William Sherwood Fox, Silken Lines and Silver Hooks, 1954
