It's time people!

The 1st reports of success came in from Ashland last night. Usually the smelt begin their run in Duluth only a couple days after they begin in Ashland. Last year it was 1 day. So I expect some early action by this weekend. I will be up there this weekend and will report on how the run is progressing. It usually take a week or so for a ramp up to the peak of the run, so we have some time to plan out some excursions.

I'm still going with the 25th as the peak....Woo Hoo!!!! smile smiley

Saturday night on Park Point was pretty tough, even though the breeze was lite, the waves from the NE kept coming. So smelting got a little wet...pretty normal I guess. The smelting success was pretty minimal. Some people got a few dozen, others none, and some with a dozen or less. But....it was the beginning of the run on Park Point.

So we move to Sunday, last night, yep only a day later. Same wind, same waves, same direction. Now people are talking about a much better evening! Some are talking of gallons, others half a cooler! This is how it works, 1st a trickle then it picks up from there! So it should be game on this week depending on how those persistent NE winds treat us. Too strong means cooler water gets blown in and shuts things down, a change of direction even a little can help a great deal as well. So we shall see. The forecast doesn't look promising, but the smelt are ready!

Yesterday the wind died and the waves laid down with a sunny sky. So the water warmed and the smelt came calling. Now not everyone had a banner evening. As with all fishing some just do better than others. So last night some filled multiple coolers easily. Others worked hard for a few gallons. But the action is definitely on the up swing!

The forecast shows a stupid persistent wind out of the NE. Which ain't good. But if it's lite enough like yesterday and today. Conditions will be good for success. It's time to get your smelt fix in!

I hope you are enjoying your smelt Sandburr, I'm enjoying mine!

The run this year is nearly the total opposite of the run last year in terms of weather conditions. We have had basically a permanent NE wind for weeks and weeks. Now this hasn't stopped the run from starting or petering along. But it sure has made it tough on us smelters. Now with the all the rain, the rivers are running high and dangerous, of course the beaches have been seeing 6-8 foot breakers so that's no fun either! So we are kind of in a holding pattern for now. Hopefully, when the rivers drop, and the surf subsides, the smelt will still be in the mood to find their way into my fry daddy!

The run in Duluth still continues. The sandy shores of Park Point are still producing. We got about 3 coolers last night. No huge pulls but very consistent 1-2 gallons a time. A couple 5 gallon pulls helped the average too!

The run should last for about another week as peters out on the Park Point. The rivers have had some successes, but nothing terribly consistent. But there are fish to be had with dip nets. Get them while you can boys, or you'll have to wait till next year.

Last night was a pleasant evening to seine as well, the NE winds finally died down and are now switching to other directions for our comfort. Sadly though, my waders were still not dry from the previous weeks expedition. Anyone have a great plan for drying waters?

Well folks it looks like the season has come to an end. Another year and a bunch of new issues. But even though we had some really tough conditions to smelt in, we still got our fish. Although we had to get wet to do for the most part. But that just comes with the territory! 2015 was such a nice weather year, it only makes sense that we got punished in 2016. Hopefully the spawning success didn't take a hit with all those nasty waves beating on the smelt and eggs. We shall see over the next couple years.

Thanks to everyone that posted. Without all your input this site wouldn't be as great as a tool as it is! I'm also glad to see that no one got killed on the beaches, rivers, or drives home. I'm also glad that no one got killed in the parking lots from stealing someone's smelt right out the trucks. I pity the fool that gets caught red handed if Big Andy gets a hold of him! And even though some p.o.s. stole a brand new net from one of the nicest couples in the history of the world, they got another, and still got their smelt! So even with the bad, things worked out well this year!

Thanks again everyone, see you all again next year!
