I took my brother up last night. He hadn't ever worked Park Point with a seine for smelt before. So we met up with a couple buddies and my son at 9:30pm. We had 5 coolers basically full by before midnight. It's a lot of fun when they are running like that. We were averaging about 3-4 gallons per pull for a while. Things were still going strong when we left. We just couldn't carry anymore. I'm sure the run will continue for a little while yet, but things have to start slowing down soon. It's been a fantastic last 5 days!
Here is Brent, John, and Dave (not me). With maybe 7-8 gallon pull.
And occasionally we get other fish in the net too! A real nice laker!
I thought I was going to see you and your buddy on opener, but I see why I didn't. Looks like you slaughtered the Smelt! Maybe next year I can put you guys onto the Walleye Wonderworld and you can put me onto the Sublime Smelt, eh? I've always been curious about smelting, just never tried it. Sounds like you made Shannon a happy camper. Nothing like the first few weeks of open water in the up nort country!
If you've got short, stubby fingers and wear reading glasses, any relaxation you would normally derive from fly fishing is completely eliminated when you try to tie on a fly. ~ Jack Ohman, Fear of Fly Fishing, 1988
