One thing that I did forget to mention was that the Park told us they didnt have any "equipment" on their 4 wheelers for rescues. Like, flash lights, first aid kits, compass, water, matches. They only have that stuff on their snowmobiles. Hopefully that will change! I understand funding can be an issue... but if the first park ranger had even one of those items it would have made the night a better one! grin smiley

Very True Sandburr,
I know I will no longer go out in the woods without a lighter and a compass for sure! Not that I or anyone ever plans on getting lost, but it goes to show you, that anything really can happen!

Glad everyone is okay, eh?

When I was 17, me and 5 other buddies were up north on a friends property... partying, as 17 year olds will do. On Saturday, we grabbed a bunch of beer, packed it in a backpack and decided to take a hike out in the Superior National Forest. We started by following a snowmobile trail that was marked with orange ribbons tied to branches in the trees. We hiked around for a couple of hours and noticed we couldn't find the ribbons anymore. So we tried backtracking and got totally lost. We ended up out in the woods until the next morning. At first we thought nothing of it, but as it got dark, we got pretty worried. We ended up sleeping in a field. The next morning, we started walking around again. We decided to head straight south by keeping the sun to our left knowing we would have to eventually get out of the woods. Going north was at least a hundred miles of wilderness. We FINALLY found a fenced pasture with a cow in it and walked around and found a farmhouse with a guy working on a tractor. We told him we were on Briar Lake and we were lost and we needed to get back. He ended up driving us back to the lake. Unfortunately, we were on the wrong side. We could of hiked around the lake but we tired, hungry and ornery so we decided to swim across instead.

Talk about a bunch of drunk kids out in the woods ooo smiley

Kinda funny that your mom thought going to sleep in that situation was the way to survive, given that drowsiness is one of the stages of hypothermia. She's lucky she woke up. Sounds like they rescued the park ranger more than he rescued them. Probably a city boy with a country job.

Reminds me of the time I was a kid fishing in a boat with my father on a cold grey morning in northern Minnesota. He was wearing a winter coat, hat and boots and I had on jeans, a nylon jacket and wet tennis shoes. Only one of us had a paying job and it wasn't me so he could afford to dress better. I was so cold my teeth were chattering but he was warm so we stayed out. After a time I started feeling warm too and very sleepy so I curled up in the front of the boat to take a nap. Apparently that was enough to satisfy his scientific curiosity or the fish stopped biting and we went in.

In the warmth of the cabin I got chills and my teeth started chattering again, which seemed strange at the time. Not so much now.

Wow Dude,
That is a crazy story too! I guess I have only been lost or disoriented in the woods once or twice and it was only for an hour or so, so I have no idea what you guys have been through. I do know I'm a wuss, and would not enjoy spending and unplanned night in the woods, perdiod! I know from now on I will carry a lighter, a compass and water at the very least when I'm walking in the woods.
Happy Tuesday wink smiley

We had lighters, water and unfortunately... no compass. We were very young, and being young, we thought we were invincible. Looking back, I don't remember a lot of the details. I don't think we were even that freaked out about it... just another party that lasted a bit longer then we thought it would. One thing I do remember, though, is that it was in June and that next day after sleeping in the woods, we had hiked into this very deep valley. We went way down in elevation and at the bottom, there was still a bit of snow. I thought that was really wierd... cool... unbelievable... that in what I thought was the middle of summer, we would find snow... I will always remember that... It's one of the reasons I moved back to Minnesota and one of the reasons I will always stay here. Short of living in Cananda, it is one of the nicest places on earth... at least I think so, eh? grin smiley
