Nice bear! He looks wide at the ears and even has the sagging belly already! Oh and he looks a bit HOT! cool smiley My guess is the 250 to 275 range?

Is the hole filled with water next to the bait on purpose?

The area the bait is in is low. When we started to dig a pit the 1st time, we found out it was too low. So we moved a bit over on a higher hump. As for size, it's really hard to tell in a trailcam photo. But you are in the same camp as I, he clearly is a mature boar. The logs are cut to 6 feet long, so I think he is well into the 6-7 foot categorie. I hope my buddy can close the deal on him so we can give you guys some real data.

Over the years, I have come to expect the last minute baiters to come in and rearrange the party so to speak. So I now place my baits so far back off the beaten path that even a diehard would wonder why? An example, off the dirt road go to the end of the logging road, then take a 4 wheeler another 2 miles, then walk another 200-300 yards to a bait station. That usually keeps them away from my bait stations. And yes, we will all be hunting on the 1st. And keep the hot weather coming until things cool off for the opener. That should make the bears cruise pretty good for the opening day!

Tomorrow is the big day!!!! The weather looks great for Wed (cool with light winds), not so good for Thur now (all day cold-rain). So I think I'm planning on being not too picky on opening day. We have 3 hunters in our party, 2 way up north, and 1 close to home. With a little luck, we will have some more pic's, reports, and good stories for all. I'm going on a bear hunt, with a string and a stick! OH MY!

Well, the 1st couple of days have been interesting. We have have gone 1 for 3. My buddy hunting the no quota area bagged his 1st black bear. A 5ft sow, weighing 175lbs. Now this is the bait with a couple of big bruins on it, but she came in at 5pm on the opener. I certainly agree with his decision. She is was one of the "smaller" bears on the bait, but he has 2 tags that he can fill. So now he will wait a few days to let things settle down, keep baiting, and hunt again, if the camera is showing some promising action. He did great, he made a good shot, recovered the bear quickly, had some help getting it to the meat locker within a couple of hours of harvest. This will be some tasty meat!!

As for my way up north hunting, things were looking real good.
Then reality sets in.

Our 1st bait, and most promising, has been taken over by wolves. The final 6 days of baiting showed only 1 bear on the trail camera, the rest wolves. It is such a catch 22 using meat scraps in wolf country. The bears love it but so do the wolves. We will now only bait with sweets at that site! Hopefully, the bears will come back after the wolves lose interest.

Our 2nd bait station now has loggers on it. Their work has them only 300-400 yards a way now. And those machines are really loud. The good news is the bait is very active, but I think it needs to be hunted on the weekends when they are not working. We moved a camera on to it to track when the activity is happening.

The 3rd station just needs to be hunted more, it has 2 nice bears on it, and the time just needs to be put in there, and the results will come. Too bad our 2nd evening got rained out by a nasty storm. I will be going back up over the weekend for another day.

This is the bear that my buddy harvested. 5' sow. A nice 1st bear.
