Hammer..

Out east (even in parts of Ontario).. Walleye is actually called Pickerel by the people, which makes it confusing because then there's Chain Pickerel which is a smaller version of the Northern Pike (the record Chain Pickerel is something like 9.5 lbs.)

I don't know why they can't just call a walleye a walleye like everyone else.

Even a BAD day of fishing is better than a good day of work; paydays excluded!

Some people call walleye "walleyed pike." not sure where or why, but I heard that growing up in Michigan from time to time.

There are several species and subspecies of pickerel, including the chain, redfin and grass who are native to the U.S. They don't get as big as northerns or muskies, the world record chan pickerel is 9 lbs. 6oz., the redfin is 2lbs. 4 oz. and the grass is one pound even. I have seen walleye referred to as pickerel at restaurants, not sure how you wouldn't know the difference . . .

Sportsnut, when you figure out why people call walleye something else, please try to figure out why in the South crappies are speckled perch (even though they aren't related to perch or walleye) and bluegill are bream (pronoumced "brim" like the brim of a hat). Oh yeah, sunfish are stumpknockers, where does that come from?
