Thanks for the compliments Jason.
To start with having such a great boat partner that's loaded with knowledge and drive really helped spur me on to keep moving.

The water temps flucuated with some lakes being spring fed to river fed.
They went from the mid 50's to low 60's.Each lake has it's own personality if you will.

I had thought about dropping in size to a 2.5" shad when we were getting short strikes ,but they felt like small fish so we stayed with the 3.5" shad .It paid off on some nicer fish.
We fished shallower water along the grass /sand edges looking for agressive feeding walleyes .
They were the males that were caught. The females are still in their dulldrums after as they are done spawning.
My goals was to take advantage of the fish that wanted to feed instead of trying to coax those that were ho humm about feeding.

Knowing the clear water lake we started in would shut down at 1st light we left after day break to a stained water lake that is known to me as a day lake. That lake did not pay off for eyes. Our locator went south too so I could only work flats instead of getting on those windy twisty breaks.
After we fished all day & came back to the same lake for an evening run ,I had talked to several boats that were leaving & nothing was caught so that move early in the day was the right move.

The gills were not ready to spawn yet as that lake is spring fed and the water temp was still in the 50's.
You could tell with the male crappies being not to black yet and the fe,ales crappies were full of roe.

The pike have spawned and the bass are pre feeding going into their spawn.

Having such great watersheds and working a ton of structure paid off.
We were geared with a cooler full of bevies and sandwiches so staying on the water was easy.Having the proper clothing was a bonus.
The morning started out at 40 degrees.
I could see how the fish moved to deeper water because of the colder temps.
It's amazing how a few degrees can effect the fish.

I see SandBurr did a number on those eaters at BSL.
I love that look of contentment on your mug cooking up those eyes.
I'd say Cody has been taught well.I'll have to start calling him Cody "the catch'n machine" Nice pics SB ...

and I'm glad to hear BD did well too.

Nice fish sand burr, didn't see you out there on bsl. We did 12 on sat. but had 3 people to do it. It was a constant bite especially the northerns and bass, had my son and grandson with, grandson caught the big one. Our stringer might of been a lb bigger though.

Yessir folks,

The opener was great. Size was a bit off. I caught well over 30 'eyes on the opener and released almost all of them. Largest was 17" but I saw a few in the 20" plus category. Tap and I went out on Monday night and caught 20 just for the heck of it before we had to head home. All were released.

Now I know most of you have had northerns go for something after you caught it, but I got one that just wouldn't let go! Something big hit the ultralite and it took quite a while to get it up. When it was finally netted, it was a 10" 'eye with about a 6 lb northern that wouldn't let go. It finally spit the 'eye out and we threw it back. The 'eye looked okay too, so we threw that back as well. Very strange.

All in all we had a great time. I cannot tell you how many we caught but I do know we had limited with nice eaters every day, but I personally only brought 6 home and Woodtic and I contributed 10 to the fish fry. Caught a great variety too. Northerns, smallies, rockbass, perch, sunnies, etc. A great opener!
