Sportsnut....nice picture of theFORMER coach, like FORMER coach Tice,,enough said.To you Fisher,,The Petenwell was great all winter but haven't been there since.Fished Lake Dubay 1st weekend in May right off 51/39 Interchange for Smallies and 'eyes, just happened to be scouting for Muskies.Haven't fished the Eau Pleine since they started playing with the water levels.I figured central WI.was near New London,,40 miles west of Green Bay.I live on the Wolf River which is 4 feet higher after all this rain.I hope the weather improves, will be at Crane Lake 1st of June on the way to Vermillon Bay Canada the !0th.Tight lines

I envy you guy's going to the northern glacial lakes.Anything north of the larenthian divide is so peaceful.
I worked @ Vouagers Lodge a couple seasons,what a hoot.

The Vermillion gorge in Crane is a good spot if it is not posted for spawning eyes. It should be done by the time you get there.
Pigs Island at the beginning of Namikan always paid off.
The falls by Old Dutch Bay is a good spot too,it's at the start of Kabetogama .The Ashe River can have some & the back channel by Moxie Island is good. It's across from the info center .I'd go through a flat of crawlers in a weeks time.

good luck and if there is time a trip into Lac Suel should not be ignored.

Jeeezzzz....You would think that fisher writes for a livin'..lol...j/k, very nice article.

I wait untill later in the year to fish the pike but I still use the old spinner bait tipped with a sucker minnow when I do. If they follow but won't hit, take off the spinner and bobber fish the suckers. Can't cover as much ground but produces fish.

My favorite big pike lure is the mighty Dr.Spoon! I have caught a few big pike on mine and it seems to always catch something.

I'm starting to change my Pike preference to White spinnerbaits with 1 large colorado blade, WITH the skirt trimmed to the hooks curve.

thats what I like is white spinner baits with a 10" sucker and stinger. I have done well on the river in the logans or in the pits.
It's hard to beat a daredevil, but when it comes to making noise over cabbage a buzz bait or a spook can be devastating.
Sometimes I'll slow everything down with a plastic crawler texas rig style.
It all depends on thier aggression level.
Don't you just love that strike close to the boat, the drags sceaming & your soaked from the wall of water it just kicked up.

The venerable spoon is sometimes the best option and almost always one worth trying. However, there are LOTS of tricks, subtleties, and techniques to fishing spoons. For that reason many guys are unsuccessful with them. Eppinger lures (maker of the Daredevle spoon) have a great page on their site with various spoon retrieve styles for different fishing situations. Webpage is

http://www.dardevle.net/dardevlecgi/index.pl?init=1

After on this home page click on the "Fishing Techniques" spoon in the right hand column.

Learning these will absolutely put more pike in the boat for a guy.

By the way--notice that there are 7 great new colors available this year--look like real winners to me!
