I haven't been out lately but the lakes I've driven by in and around St. Paul it looks like the shorelines are getting bad. The ice should be ok for walking but plan to jump over a foot or 2 of water to get onto the ice. If you're going to be out in the next few days you might also want to bring some planks you may need them to get on the ice and even if you don't you might want to leave them on the ice near the landing because you may need them on the way back in.
I went fishing late ice last season and on the way out I only had a foot of open water to cross but thankfully I thought ahead and brought a couple of 2x6's and left them on the ice just in case. When I went back in I had 8 feet of open water to cross. Glad we brought 10 footers with.

I got on the ice around 8am and left the ice around 4pm, the air temp was in the mid to upper 50's and fairly windy. The spots I drilled had maybe 14-16 inches of ice.
I think the shoreline melted so face due to the dark bottom along shore. Once the bottom is exposed in one spot the sun can penetrate and warm up that water much quicker.

I was on the ice last Saturday and did take the wheeler out. When I drilled holes I had 24". This was the McGregor Area. I do know that there were vehicles out on Big Sandy.

Been down south last 30+ years & with health issues little more hesitant & not able ya run auger, or would have gone fishing, ice is still thick enough ta suport some wieght, guess it better ta be safe than sorry... some say rain tonight others say snow inforcast...
