When you caught your biggest fish (Walleye, Bass, Pike, Musky, etc) were you intentionally targeting it, or did you bump into numbers fishing?

The biggest freshwater fish I have landed was luck, but I'm not real proud of it b/c it was a catfish. I have lost bigger pike at the side of the boat (light line, bad knots, drag too tight when he saw the boat and turned to run, mostly angler error) that were hooked when we weren't targeting a specific species but just fishing.

As for saltwater, it was luck. 37 lb. 12 oz dolphin (mahi mahi, not Flipper) that we saw as we were trolling for tuna in the Fla. Keys. Caught in December, while most big fish are caught from April to July. He was chowing in the middle of a school of tuna right on the surface, we pitched a live bait to him and it was on. I have never been so exited in my life.

My biggest fish was a little of both,

we were going through a channel at a lake up north (can't remmember the name) i had one rod w/a spinnerbait on because we were not planning on fishing. We were gonna go skiing so we took out our ski boat. As we we were going through I see the biggest pike of my life gunning it away from our boat cause she was scared. I whipped out the rod and through the spinner in the direction of where she was headed, the second it hit the water she grabbed it and ran with it. I got 'er in eventually so i guess it was intent in that i saw the fish, but it was luck in that i wasen't planing on fishing. It was a 32" not actually the biggest ive ever seen but the biggest ive ever caught and I didn't weight her.

Pure skill and intent.

I know Carp were not on your list but my biggest is a 17 pound Carp on a plane hook and a few kernels of corn.....I think I was about 18 at the time.

I have a half dozen 28" or bigger Eyes that were targeted also.

Both of my biggest fish were caught by luck.

My largest pike (39") was caught while trolling parallel along a weedline throwing buck tails. After many beautiful casts (or so I thought anyways) right at the edge where I was sure I would land a monster, I made probably the "worst cast" of the trip. Instead of the buck tail landing where I wanted it to go, my bait caster hung up in mid cast and my lure flew to my right into the open water where I didn't think there would be any fish. While I'm grumbling and hurridly reeling in, the pike hit it hard. It was a fun fight.

My largest walleye (29") was caught while I was rigging up another pole. We were trolling across a bay and I was rigging up a spinner bait. While I was doing that I threw a 2" shad rap over the side so I would have something in the water while I was rigging up my other pole. I kept picking up lots of weeds dragging that crank bait, so when the rod slipped forward I figured I had more weeds. When I tugged to get the lure free, low and behold, it tugged back.

The HEAVIEST fish was luck, the longest was intentional.

I was down by a culvert testing a new Rapala X-rap last year opener weekend. I wanted to see what they could do after seeing the video in Wal-Mart. I threw it about 18 feet to a log and in 3 seconds I was fighting this catfish that I didn't weigh but was too much for the 10 lb line I'm sure. I did land it and keep my lure (without a net) but I was sure the barrel rolls it did were going to cost me the lure an hour after purchase.

Longest was actually last year also a 38" Pike that I changed lures 5 times to finally hook. I don't remember how many casts I made that I watch it follow the lure, but it kept missing what I was throwing out there any any speed. I don't even remember right now what lure I finally hooked the damn thing on, but it was a fun 45 minutes anyway.

(ok.. so neither fish is actually THAT large.. but anyway)
