I am coming up from Fla. this weekend. Yeah, its 65 in Ft. Lauderdale right now, but I'm looking forward to the high of ZERO on Friday. Seriously, hope to get out on the ice. What is the experience of everyone on here when the temp dips that low? Does it shut the bite off? I'm going anyway since I already went to Outdoor World and got thermal underwear & other cold weather gear but I would like ot have a realistic outlook for the fishing. Thanks for all of your thoughts.

My sister- and bro-in-law live in the NE St. Paul area. We are staying local, the lakes he mentioned before as being possibilities are Bald Eagle, Peltier, Centreville and others in that area. I have only been there to fish once before and that was in June a couple of years ago, we went on Big Marine and between my bro-in-law, my stepson and I we caught a mess of crappies (about 30 total, we kept 10 or 11), a few bass and assorted others that were released, nothing huge but lots of action. It was a great day of fishing, especially with a 6 year old (at the time) with us. He is now 8 and this is his first time ice fishing, I grew up in Michigan but haven't been ice fishing in probably 20 years, so we are both pretty exited. I will let you know how it goes.

Iceman--were you or any other brave souls able to get out on Pokegama on Saturday?

We didn't fish until Sunday. It would have been too cold for my stepson on Friday or Sat. Saturday ended up being the day my wife (the one who is from St. Paul originally) planned a get-together so she could see her friends and relatives.

When it warmed up on Sunday, we took the recommendation of the bait store and hit the south end of Chisago in the late morning/early afternoon, it was safe to drive, ice was about 18 inches, and caught a load of sunfish plus one stray crappie, all on eurolarvae. Good, almost nonstop action for my stepson, who is 8 and loves to fish, but this was his first time ice fishing so we wanted to make sure he caught something. Then, after dinner at Mancini's, my bro-in-law and I met some friends on Bald Eagle for the nighttime crappie bite, fishing was steadliy slow, we were there from 8:30 till about 11 and caught 4, 3 keepers, our friends were there from 3:30 till 11 and they caught about 40 but most were small, they ended up keeping 8 or 10, all on crappie minnows w/assorted jigs/teardrops/etc. Bald Eagle was still posted no driving but the ice was 18 inches and some people were driving, we didn't chance it however because we didn't have to, our friend had a snowmobile so he came and picked us up at the landing. Monday we tried a spot on North Center for about 30 mins. that my bro-in-law had gone to before with some success, but noting was biting, we took a quick look around the lake and saw that there were either cars leaving or there was no activity, so we assumed that there was no bite and went back to the south end of Chisago so my stepson would get some more action and it worked, caught another 30-40 sunfish plus 3 crappie, all in all a good weekend with lots of action, my stepson can't wait to go back next year. It was also my first time ice fishing since I was 12 and I had a lot of fun also, so hopefully we can start making it an annual event.

Iceman, looks like you had a good time notwithstanding the weather. We caught lots of small fish on Chisago, my bro-in-law tells me that is normal for his fishing there. But it provided lots of action for a young angler's first trip on the ice. He is already asking if we can go back next year.

By the way, I see in your profile that you list Gull Lake as one of your favorites. We spent a week at the Quarterdeck in July, there were about 20-25 of us depending on the day, what a great trip, didn't catch any walleye but caught loads of just about everything else, a few pike, one 4+ lb. bass with several others over 2 and loads of perch/gills/sunfish/etc. Between the 10-12 of us that were fishing we might have caught a thousand fish total, of which the vast majority went back in the water, we kept enough to have a fish fry one day and that was it. Other than the two days where it was too windy to go out in the small boats we had we did not have a bad day of fishing. We had a "tournament" the last day, whoever caught the most fish won, but the adults had a rule that if you lost count of how many fish you caught you went back to zero (which of course every adult did), so the kids all won something, my niece was top lady angler, my nephew won most fish and my stepson won biggest fish with a 14 inch bullhead, it was hilarious watching the kids really get into it and a good way to keep them interested in fishing.
