Iceman,

I could do that relatively easy. In fact I could show who's on-line - total posts etc., etc., just like all the other forums. But I am embarrased as to how dead this forum is at times. It seems to be pretty busy during the weekdays and pretty dead during the weekend. I guess a lot of users come here during work.

One thing a lot of you probably don't know, or understand, is that I built this forum myself. I am a web developer and thought it would be kind of cool to build this from scratch. A lot of the other forums you see out there, in fact, all of them as far as I can see, have bought the software to run a forum. Either bought it or found free code. That is all fine and dandy, but a lot of the fishing sites out there are run by some who know pretty much nothing about writing code. Since this is something I do for a living (code) I decided to give it a wack. What this means is I can do just about anything I want. File uploads, stickymail, autoresponders, etc -- you name it.

Part of the problem though, is time. Another part of the problem is I am trying to keep the site in a non-profit status which means I probably am not going to dish out money for programming or code. There are a lot of things I want to do with little time to do them. And to keep the site non-profit is paramount as far as I am concerned. It keeps these forums unbiased and since I let guides, resort owners, bait and tackle shop owners all advertise and post pictures for free, I think eventually that will be the key on attracting a lot more users. I mean, wouldn't you go to where all the these Minnesota people are are posting? I already have about 10 guides who, at times, are regular users here and I am always trying to find ways to get more. Any ideas? PLEASE speak up. Next I will be pushing for articles written by guides which will be even more publicity for them. I think this is a win - win situation for the guides and myself. They get free advertisement and can show off their stuff, I get a busier forum that relies on no monies from advertisement.

Try going to another one of those fishing web sites, especially the busy ones, and post a link to your favorite guide's web page. What do you get? It looks like this...

By the way Fred ***** told me that they are really biting on Mille Lacs. His guide service *********** has been catching 30"+ walleyes all month. If you would like to get into some of this action, call him at ***-***-****. Or better yet, email him at *****@****.com. There is more info on his site at www.********.com.

Get the word out, they are slamming them over there!! ;-)

That is a problem. You get a user base where the only ones who get to post links, emails, phone numbers, etc. are people who are either part of their clique or people who spend money on their sites. Now, if you were a fisherman and wanted to get good reliable information on which guide is hot, where exactly are they biting, etc., how can you seriously go to a forum that doesn't let a majority of its users post unbiased information? You see, what you are getting is VERY biased. You only get posts from guides that are paying a monthly advertising fee or guides that have their web site hosted at these so-called fishing sites.

I wish my database was still in tact. Last year, here on the forum, was quite a long thread about this problem. One of the guides who posts here regularly had a client who he took out fishing and they caught a lot of trophy fish. I mean, they kept the eaters and took pictures of the trophy fish and had a fantastic weekend. The client went to the most popular fishing site in Minnesota (he had been a member there for a couple of years) and he posted a report that had the guide's website, email, phone number, etc. ALL the stuff was blanked out. They even blocked out the lake. Now, give me a break!!! This site didn't want to have any competition with the guides they were charging a monthly fee for advertising or web hosting. What a bunch of crap! Anyway, the guide didn't even know that his client had tried posting his information on the so called fishing site. The client saw his hacked up post and called the guide to let him know. Needless to say, that guide will not post on that site anymore. In fact, he won't even visit it. That creates a forum that is only giving you the (what I call) "Big Buck Posts." In other words, you pay, you play. You don't pay, you don't play.

THIS is why I am very serious in keeping this site a non-profit site. Eventually word will get out that I treat all users and guides, bait and tackle shop owners, resort owners, and even the common users --- The Same. This makes my forum unbiased, to the point, and eventually it will mean better and more accurate information.

Whew -- you got me going!

Anyway... I digress from your question --

I'll think about it!

A thought WebDude, would it be possible to offer some of the "smaller time" local television and Radio fish and game celebrities space on here for posting? I'll give an example.... "Hi, I'm John Doe, host of the Cast-offs on station WKWK at 11 pm Sunday nights. This week we went to ABC Lodge on beautiful Lake XYZ for some fantastic Bullhead fishing!" Then WebDude, you could offer them their own page or link (sorry, I don't know the proper term for what you would offer)that would take the reader, if he or she chooses,(being politically correct there)to their own site or page where the reader, by choosing to go there, accepts the fact that they will be inundated with shameless promotions for the latest "hot lure". Wouldn't this keep your site for the most part not for profit? I can see/read through most of the BS associated with fishing/hunting shows, (as can most of all the other visitors here) so I wouldn't care what they were selling. Just my opinion and I'm trying to get my posting count up! LOL-Pete

Excellent idea Peter D.! I would definitely do something like that. It would make this forum a bit more unique. And as long as there is some value to where the users are going, I don't have a problem with that.

Bring it on!

WebDude

p.s. I don't mind people or sites that sell products. I think if you sell something of value that people would buy, I have no problem with advertising that here. I will just not sell the products for you. That keeps me in the non-profit status.

And who knows, if this site really takes off, I may opt to try to make money off of it. BUT!!! I will not make a profit off of guides, resorts or bait and tackle shops. I know some of the people who own these types of businesses and believe me, they have a hard enough time staying in business. Of course, if Lund or Crestliner wanted to put a banner on one of my pages and paid me to do so, I am not sure if I would turn them down... :-)

WebDude, your last post allows me to use an oldie but a goodie.....

"If Dolly Parton were a (fishing guide/bait shop owner/Resorter), she'd be flat busted too!"

I have other ideas but I'll post them individually to keep raising that post count!!! Have a good day, -Pete

hard ice,

I fixed it so you now see members who are logged in and the total number of users on-line. Hoped that helps!
