The huge annual ice fishing extravagnza on Gull Lake in the Brainerd lakes area is scheduled for next weekend, 1/21. They announced today that they will NOT be cancelling this event or pushing it back due to the ice conditions. It will be the same format and date as originally planned. However, it sounds like they will be moving it across the road to Round Lake. I don't know that the change of scenery is official yet. But it sounds like that's going to happen.
The Brainerd Jaycees sponsor this event. Here's their website.
The website notes the change of locations to Round Lake. The area of Gull that the tourney has always been on only has about 10" of ice. I'm not sure how much Round has, but it must be better in order to have the 14" by next weekend, which they said is what they have to have in order to hold the Extravaganza.
The latest on this is that nothing is official yet. They have in fact moved it to Round Lake, IF it happens next Saturday. They still have not issued a permit and won't issue a permit unless they have 14" of ice. Right now, they only have 13". They're going to make an official announcement by Wednesday. If they don't get a permit, it's going to get pushed back to February 4th and I would imagine back to Gull. But I guess we wait to find out.....
Well, the weather has been just barely cold enough this week and an inch of ice was made. When they checked the ice today they found 14" to 14.5" of ice, so a permit was issued. So everything's a go for this Saturday on Round Lake. If you're going to fish this contest - good luck!
