Hope this is helpful.

I joined LSF Pro Staffers Pete Brook and Chris Wallace for a day of fishing on Mille Lacs. Our game plan was to go out of NW end and target walleyes on the rocks in 14-16 feet of water. As usual when fishing, things dont always go as planned.

We hit the lake around 12 on Sunday afternoon. The lake for some reason had no snow on it. We could bottom through 8-10 inches of ice. The ice sure was a cracking and shifting which made things erie for not just me. After hopping a couple of cracks with open water, we stopped and Pete busted a hole open with a Jiffy Stealth STX auger. The MarCum lx-i hand held sonar read 10 feet. The lx-i works best on a wet surface. Knowing this, Chris filled up a bottle of water to use. As we walked, about every 50 yards we would stop and dump a little water on the ice and use the lx-i to determine the depth. As we continued to look for 20 feet of water, Pete followed with the auger drilling in 14, 16, 18, and finally 20 feet of water. Having holes drilled in shallow water was part of our plan. We wanted to move in shallow in the evening without spooking the fish by drilling a bunch of holes.

Soon after getting our portables setup, we experienced an aggressive jumbo perch bite.

(Pete holds his own too)

We were targeting the fish with help from our MarCum Flasher's. Custom Jigs and Spins Jigging Demon, and Scenic Tackle Go Devil's were the most effective lures. Shiners and fat heads for bait. As we were jigging spoons, cutting the bait in half using a minnow head was necessary. I even got in on the action!

(And the owner of your favorite fishing site!)

As the daylight disapeared, we moved into shallow water. Remember, we drilled these holes earlier to not spook the walleyes. As good as the perch bite was, the walleye bite was disapointing on the rocks. We managed to pick up 2 nice eaters. It appears that the eyes have moved to deeper water.

The walleyes were biting very light. Pete commented that the sensitivity of his new medium custom rod from Midwest Rod and Reel was something he has not experienced or expected from a ice rod. These are very nice rods, and comparably priced to other custom rod manufacturer's. Myself and Chis were outfitted with medium action rods from MRR used as a deadstick. I will be getting more!

(Chris and a couple of piglets)

It was an enjoyable day of fishing which I plan to repeat many more times this season. I hope you enjoyed my report, post any questions you have here at My Fishing Pals and I will do my best to anwer them.

Thanks!

Excellent post Mike! Would you mind if I added the pics to pictures section? I'll link each one to your site. You can go there and see how I've done this for other guides and fishing sites...
