Anyone know of where I could get a flasher unit or a camera for a good price?
I don't have much money to work with so I am looking for a good deal.
Anyone able to help a guy out?

Mr. Nonfisherman
I've had the same problem in the past. It was a few years ago I decided to suck it up and spend the $300.00 on the FL-8 Vexilar. My problem with it is, why does such simple technology still cost that much? Sonars for fishing are nothing new, my buddy has one from the late 70's early 80's, and the only difference is that his doesn't have the interference protection switch. I don't understand why the FL-18 isn't $300.00 and the FL-8 should be cheaper, NOT hey -we made a new model we better make it at least $100.00 more than the previous one. I know I'm no help to you, but it was nice to vent a little bit about this subject. I wish you the best of luck and hope you find one for cheap.

If you don't mind getting a second hand unit of either,
1) It might be worth it to check out a few garage sales or classified adds. My first units were accuired that way.
2)If you belong to a fishing club or know someone in a club, put out "the word" what you are looking for. Many times people are looking to upgrade and will sell their old ones at a good price, just so they have the reason to go out and get something new.
3) You might want to go to a Goodwell store I have found some great buys on top shelf items like rod & reels that I felt guilty for getting for so little. I remember seeing a Humming Bird flasher for 20 or 30 dollars one time.

Non-

I won't get into the issues of supply and demand here but I will agree with BD and say, if you can, spend the cash on the sonar. The sonar will benefit you far, far more than a camera. I personally think the camera is still a novelity. True, it will tell you some things that sonar never will (unless you work for the Navy) but it will never give you the mobility to hit 20 holes in 10 minutes and have a rough idea of the bottom composition and the depth.

Don't know what you're considering cheap but there is an FL-8 SLT kit on eBay starting at $150 (just peeked).

And don't sweat the difference between the FL-8 and the FL-18. There are a couple of differences but just having either model will make your days on the ice far more enjoyable.

Also - you may be a bit behind the 8 ball with ice just starting to get good on the lakes. smile smiley Keep looking, you'll find one.

Oh - check the Vexilar website too. I know on occasion they have reconditioned units (again, may be tough to find right now).
