Any one fishing? How are you doing? I had to work all weekend but plan to get out Tuesday. Last Thursday did great on the crappies on South Center. Here is a question for you all. I have been reading alot about lake turn over. How do you know for sure if a lake has? I was having some good eye action and now they have seemed to move on. The surface temp was 48deg. on Thursday I have read that the lakes will turn when the water temp hits 52. Any other ways to know if it has turned or not?

Have a great and safe Halloween Night!

I'm bummed. I have been going back to school and I have class tonight. First time I have missed a Halloween with the kids. They are bummed and I am bummed. My wife is bummed too (she has to take them). As far as I can tell, the cats are bummed too. The Neighbors? Bummed. Heck... everybody is bummed. But I am especially bummed.

Shorefisher,
For the turnover your water temps sound about right. It is also possible your fish may not have moved much but just have a SEVERELY REDUCED strike zone. They may not move 4 inches to get a bait so you may need to put a minnow/crawler/or leech right on the end of their nose and leave it there to hook up. Another tactic is to go shallow (say 1-5 feet) and SLOWLY fish tight to structure (brush, trees, etc.) with live bait. Post turnover is tough but fish can be had with patience and persistence. I think that maybe the best option is to go fish the river--IT DOESN'T TURN OVER IN AN AREA WITH CURRENT.

Webdude brings an interesting point to the Halloween issue. As you know it is a marketing genius from the candymakers perspective. I have started giving my kids candy/treats that entail fishing themes. For example, the Swedish fish candy, goldfish cheese snack crackers, gummy worms, have even found some small tackle boxes with all the lures made of chocolate. They think it is really fun and it keeps them in a mindset I prefer over the plain old "gimme more sugar" thing.

Anybody else have an idea that we who are doing that parenting thing could possibly use to make the whole experience on Halloween a better and more positive time than the candy companies have made it up to be?

Good Fishing,

Little tackle boxes with chocolate lures? Mmmmmm... Never heard of such a thing. Where in the world did you find those? The candy-makers will do anything to sell their product.

I think the most recent ones were at the Target Greatland over in Woodbury. Have to verify that with the better half. I have gotten them in the past at sporting goods retailers as a seasonal promotion (Bass Pro Shop, Gander Mountain, Bear Paw, Cabelas, etc.) I think a really good idea though is to buy a small plastic Plano type box and head to the bulk candy store at the mall and pick my own items. There are many fishing or fish related candies. It is a great Christmas stocking stuffer. Also, if you have an extended family get together time at Christmas it is a very popular thing if you give one to each of the kids there (kids, reguardless of age--count me in) and they only cost a few bucks a piece to buy or make . Five dollars makes a really good one and ten dollars is a major haul. You could also upscale the box I guess and go for the moon. Here are a couple of websites that have them if you would like an idea on cost of purchase or how to make your own candy fishing tackle boxes for your kids/family/friends.

The last 2 are a little more expensive as they come with a better "decorator" type box. I am trying to find a way to make a candy rod and reel this year. The rod can be a chocolate covered thick pretzel rod. The ones that are 10 inches or so long and about a quarter of an inch thick. ---not sure of an idea for a reel though. Any ideas?
