First off, I would like to thank all the new members for siging up the last 2 months. The user database is getting rather large and I appreciate it. It makes for a more in depth and informative forum.

On another note, I am wondering if I should break the forum down a bit more. Right now I have it in 3 parts... General Fishing, Kid's Forum and Want Ads. Since I programmed this thing from scratch, I can pretty much do whatever I want. On other forums where I am a member, they usually break the forums up by either location, type of fishing or a combination of the two.

Now I don't have to break this thing up. I could just keep it the way it is. But if things keep going the way they are, I am going to end up with hundreds of pages listed at the bottom of the general fishing forum. Not really a problem, but it gets hard to find particular past posts. The search thing works well, but I am wondering if I should close and archive the old posts or break the forums up into different parts. And if I do break it up a bit, how?

I don't want to split it into sections people don't post to. I have been on a lot of sites that will have 50 different forums running but only a couple (or no) posts in those forums. Makes the site look dead. That is something I am trying to avoid.

What I am thinking is breaking this into just a few more parts, but keeping it general enough (and different enough) to make the forums a bit different then others. Most of the other forums are canned programs that have been purchased or borrowed and I don't want to mimmick them. I would rather have it unique!

What would you think of breaking it up like so?...

General Fishing Forum (the current forum)

Fishing Reports Forum (new - more for the guides and actual fishing reports)

Messages Between Members (new - not sure what to call this one - a lot of personal banter going on that could be broken out - also could be used for site suggestions, etc.)

Kid's Forum (already exists)

Want Ads (already exists)

Maybe one or two other sections?!...

Anywayz... anybody who wants to chime in, it would be appreciated. Remember that the sky is the limit here. I can pretty much do whatever I want -- within reason, of course ;-) Just looking for what you guys want!

I'll have to give this some more thought also but I think your on the right track. I'll work on a few of my wants and wishes for ya.

Like you said you don't want too many forums that have little or no action but at the same time we do need to have the Fishing forum stick closer to topic "fishing" which will lead to more users and good content.

Off the top of my head maybe a Fishing forum "strickly" and a banter type forum "Hammertime mod" where you could have a wider variety of topics and definatly keep the Want ads forum I know it's a little slow in there but that can bring people in.

Since you want to keep the forums from looking dead.. how about when someone logs into the forums it only shows those message threads that have had a post in them since our last visit? OR have it do that plus show the forums we have "subscribed/posted" into. On that page have a link to visit the rest of the threads for 'bumps' or other reasons like just wanting to read them come mid winter coming up.

Of course there's lotsa of ways to keep the place fresh and un-cluttered. I'm not a web coder by ANY means other than geocities very simple editors so I don't know how much work is involved.

I actually wouldn't mind like most message boards, if we got an EMAIL when someone replied to a group we've replied in, but again I don't know the complexity of that coding.

Another idea is to have 3 sections for fishing (Nothern MN, Central MN, and Southern MN) and then have one section for the banter.

The one thing I don't like about this site is that it seems to be 90% banter and 10% fishing info.

If you broke it up as I mentioned about that might help people to remember to post fishing reports once in awhile instead of just all the stupid banter that seems to clog the top of the forum list.

I know people on this site go fishing once in awhile so lets see some posts on how you do once in awhile. Maybe if I can read some good fishing reports here then I won't have to go to the evil empire over and Fishing Minnesota.

I think the nofishfisherman may be right. Everyone knows what part of the state they like to fish, so why not break it up like that? I suppose if you do that and draw an arbitrary map people might think their lake should be in the north section when it actually falls into middle section or something like that. The other potential problem with doing it that way, is - I think the majority of the popular lakes will fall into the central section (i could be wrong), and then what's the point of breaking it up. Oh yeah, and still have a section for banter, and want adds. I don't know but I think it is a good idea to break it up somehow.

Hey Pierbridge,

I think you're right... we should create a forum for Hammertime. ("Hammertime mod") I almost fell off the chair laughing at that one. It would definitely be for the banter!!! ;-) I could call it the Hammertime Forum. All BS and banter could go in there!

As for the regions... that's pretty much what everyone is doing. I would like to stay away from that. The thing is, I don't mind the banter, I don't mind anything really. Just trying to figure out a constructive way to break it all up so people can get to the section or info quicker.

As for the email thing, I could do that. I could even build a private email control panel so members could email each other. Just takes time. I think I could start by letting people choose whether or not they want to be notified by email when someone responds on any particular thread. They would have to realize that the email address they give in their profile would have to be a good one, otherwise there is no way I could inform them of a post. Hmmmm... I kind of like that idea. I'll start working on it when I can find the time. Work has been unbelievably busy lately.

Any other constructive stuff will definitely be considered!

I think the E-Mail notification would really help with the forums were all busy and we forget it's nice to have a notification/reminder I know it helps me keep up with all the threads in different forums/sites I frequent.

The regional idea is good but I do not think we are quite ready for that yet, even the FM or IDA sites have little or no action in most of their sub forums, right now the Ice Fishing and open water forums are the busiest.
And over at LSF the Classifieds are the main focus of their site.
And a decent forum.
We are similar to Up North I think with a great overall site with a wealth of helpful information but lacking a little in the forum content area.
IDA seems to have found a good mix of forum content along with an excellent classified section and they seem to have done it without alienating/banishing/editing their users like that one site.

I don't think the regional stuff would make much sense. It's just that to me there's more than just 3 areas of the state, and making separate forums for each area would take away from the overall messages.

Now, if someone wanted to break up the forums a little, you could go by species maybe, rather than areas of the state.

I disagree about not liking the aspect of 90% banter 10% fishing information. Mainly because there are plenty of links from the front page of the site leading to good fishing information.

It would be nice if the login was modified so you could login to the forum right from there rather, than after you click you have to scroll to the bottom of the next page to login.

Some of the other pages as well with this having to scroll a whole page b4 finding the page.. such as the site map. The scrolling a page to FIND the page you're on is honestly the only 'pet peeve' I've got on this page.

A separate ice fishing msg board might be nice. And how about a feature that automatically deletes posts that don't promote your sponsors. Just kidding, keep up the good work!
