No chatter about opener?
With all of us up on Big Sandy and we don't even have a complaint?

As much as I probably don't like the idea I did decide to join the crowd. I signed up for a HOST boat for the opener and was selected as a possibility. I will be in the running to take out someone from the Governor's party. I will not find out until tonight if its going to happen at a Host Meal. I will report back and let you know who is hopefully in my boat!

Good luck out there and be safe with the wind! wink smiley

I spent the opener in the Grand Rapids area. The fishing was a lot like the weather. Very cold, the water felt cold too. The fish were pretty lethargic. But those who braved the elements and stuck with it caught some fish. Nothing crazy, but some meals non the less. The walleyes seem to active in shallow water, 7' or less. Leeches on a plain hook worked for me. Northerns were fairly active, but no real pattern to them other than they were relating to the 1st drop. The pannies were basically no where to be found...sortive. They were still holding in deep water 17' and enjoyed a crappie minnow or tube jig.

So pretty much what one would expect on an opener with cold nasty weather! The next couple weekends could be fun as things warm up!!

I hosted a guy from the oil company for GFO, we mainly fished west of zorbaz bridge and nw of floe island on Sat AM, only picked up one eye in the slot there though, plenty of pike and perch biting.

Sorry for such a late reply for Opener, but that's how "I roll" these last few years wink smiley. Been so insanely busy with the business that i never know if/when I can go out. All the stress gave me a lot of lightly colored hairs...so Im finally starting to learn how to delegate tasks, and starting to look like you decade older guys too smile smiley. Shannon, what's the word on the guiding gig? Your post got me excited for you. Did you take one of them out? Are you still running that big Lund? Dave, I promise you that I will come smelting next year. I feel terrible for not being able to commit for two years straight.

As far as Walleye Opener, same story...we slaughtered them, but it took a lot more work this year. The extra work made my trip. Nothing like battling the cold, wind, rain, snow, and hail for two days straight...and only a couple fish every few hours...to finally find them and hammer them. I literally worked harder than ever to find the fish this year, and I'm happier than ever. I love the hunt smile smiley. Pics to follow. First two days took a full day to limit out. Last two days were 45-60 minute limits. Good times!

I spent my opener in the hospital. My wife gave birth to our son at 5:41 on opener morning. I didn't even ask if I could go fishing.

Congrats Nofish!!!! smile smiley smile smiley smile smiley

It was cold and windy! I had two people from the media. Sybil Smith (writes shore fishing books from twin cities) and Rod(Radio broadcaster for 42 years in ND) Both very tough fisher people and did great in the weather. They fished 9-4! Lots of pike and pearch with plenty of stories!

Well the kids birthday date won't ever change but the actual date of opener changes every year to make sure its always on a Saturday. So in future years his birthday won't always line up with opener.

Plus I rarely actually go fishing on opener. Its usually too busy for my tastes.

Happy new baby Nofish!!

SB, that's pretty cool to have Sybil Smith on board. That Twin Cities Fishing Guide is a fantastic little reference book for the Metro.

Congrats Nofish! My brother was born on the May 14th. Throughout my childhood I can remember him opening presents at the cabin and on the boat. No better time to have a bday in my opinion!
