It's that time of the year people! It won't be long and we will be in the heart of the smelt run. I know that a few of you guys want to come with and share in the fun this year. So lets start some chatter and make some plans. The run should be a little earlier this year and shouldn't mess up any opening fishing plans like a couple years ago!

So who's coming with? Webdude you are always welcome! smile smiley smile smiley smile smiley

The past couple years of dry weather has hurt the river flows and the smelting success. But I do have some friends that do get them good up the shore a ways. How far up are you?

The early warm weather had lots of us thinking the run would be early this year. But as usual Mother Nature has other plans for us. Like teaching us the virtue of patience! I hate that!!!! This cooler spell has slowed the ice outs and warming of the waters in Lake Superior. So the run looks to be as "usual" during mid to late April. I will keep you all posted when things bust lose! smile smiley

Here's the Word. The run is always so dependent on the weather. We had some beautiful weather early on that made things look like we were going to have a very early run. Then things switched the other way and have left us in limbo!

But the weather forecast has finally turned the other way. Well at least for the twin cities area. It always seems like it's a whole different world up there. You go over that hill coming into Duluth and wow, what a difference. But the smelt are ready, now they just need to have some "warm" water to put their eggs in. Not sure that 44 degree water is warm. But they do!

So now that things are warming up, the water will be right behind it. And the smelt will be there nearly instantly when it does. I'm guessing that things could begin sometime this weekend, slowly ramp up from there, and the peak could be around the 25th or so. Of course, this is all speculation that follows the weather forecast, and we know how often that they get that correct! Stay tuned, I won't forget to keep you all up to date, and of course anyone who wants to join in is always welcome! smile smiley
