On Black Friday my fishing partner and I hit up a small lake in Central MN. We found the Crappies to be roaming the deepest basin (45 fow). The larger ones were suspended in 30fow. As prime time rolled around we were right on top of a massive school. Not wanting to spook them by punching another hole, we tag teamed the same hole and same school for over 45 minutes.
Mitch, Good video! That being said I am going to give this one a follow on this website and others. A full video of "keeping" fish have a tendency to bring out the worst of other fisherman. You had some good lessons in the video but I bet that's not what people are watching.
Looks great an soon enough (after a few more shows) I will be pounding the ice.
Thanks for the constructive criticism and I think you're right. I actually expected some people to chime in about me keeping fish.
Some notables that aren't in the video are that the fish shown in the video are probably only a 1/3 of the fish we caught from that school. I didn't want to make the video 15 minutes long with every fish being a cookie cutter 10.5"-11" long. The majority of the fish we caught and anything over 12" were released to swim/spawn another day. Another note is that this lake is one with few predators so the Crappies have taken off and it sees very little annual pressure from anglers.
The fact of the matter is that I kept my legal limit of Crappies and had a fish fry with my family. Anyone who watches my videos regularly knows that I very rarely keep any fish for the table. I'm a C&R minded fisherman who keeps a few to eat every blue moon. The ice and walleyes are waiting for ya Sand Burr - get out there!
I have no problem with keeping fish and I too am a C&R fishereman. BUT, there are a few times a year I will keep a limit, especially when the lake I am fishing has the population to support it. Case in point... I fished the big pond all summer and didn't keep a thing, though there were some I could have (much to the chagrin of my wife who loves fish). But I kept a limit of crappies and some walleyes too from some other lakes. It all depends on the situation. I bet this year I caught a couple of hundred fish and I think I may have kept 20 altogther... some still in the freezer.
