It's that time of the year again. Warm up the 4 wheeler, loosen up the back, unload the freezer scraps, call the butcher, sharpen the knife, practice with the bow, dig out the camo, find your trail cam, and put the action plan together!

Bear hunting is a lot of work! Tens times the amount of deer hunting. But I do enjoy the chess match that we play every year with the big bruins. This year I have a different baiting plan for the well fed agricultural bears that I hunt in the no-quota zone. They are hard to get a regular pattern on. Especially if we over feed them. So we are starting to bait this weekend, and with only small amounts of very high quality morsels.

Hopefully they will keep coming back for more and more. This is a new strategy for me this year. Usually I play the volume game. But the season is long enough to change back if I need to. I don't think these agri-bears are all that desperate for food every year. But they do come in to our baits, just less predictably then the true forest bears.

Anyone else out trying to score a bear this year?

Keep in mind that many of the farmers "up" my way did not get crops in. Might want to take a drive around the neighborhood first. wink smiley If you plan is dropping "T" bones in small quantities please give me a baiting layout when your done! wink smiley

No pic's yet. Last year we had camera issues. I thought things were fixed but &%#&, so I made the trip to Mills and picked a 2 pack. I will get them out asap. My buddy has 2 that turned to crap in only 3 years. He's now shopping too. He has some action on his bait, none on mine yet anyway. I'm snookered between 2 swamps and they are a mucky disaster! Knee high water, springs flowing like mad, a bear really has to want to be there right now. Patience is the name of the game.

So does that mean you are hunting or planning too SB?

Just out checking my bait station. Looks good. Completely cleaned out. Some nice scat left behind too. A good sign of a boar trying to claim his territory. Put out a new trail cam too. Have the tree stand hung with care. Now i have visions of bruins dancing in my head. Christmas in only 2 days! Woo hoo!

The 1st day of hunting is in the books. My bait is getting punished pretty good. Looks like I have at least 4 bears visiting right now. None during legal shooting hours yesterday, but they did show the previous 2 days at 7pm. Go figure. Not many acorns falling yet, but I expect that to change with some cool evenings coming up. so I'm going to hunt hard before they mess things up for me. A couple of nice trail cam photos. Notice the cinnamon cubs!

SB, My buddies call it a "golden horseshoe", and they seem to think they know where I have it stashed too!! wink smiley

But bear hunting just never seems to work out the way you have things planned. I hunted last night and came up empty again. I pulled my chip and found a new smaller bear spent the night hanging out. Came in 30 minutes after I left. Nobody calls them dumb eh? Plus the cam showed daytime bears for the 2 days prior to the opener. Since then, none. I really want to have a talk with who ever told them when opening day was!!!!!

Still no major acorn event. A couple falling here and there. And I haven't seen any deer either this year. Strange.....
