Well folks, how'd everyone do? Did you even go? Was your lake still ice covered? And how was the fishing?

It was way too cold and windy for my wife to go Sat morning, so for the first time that I can remember, I wasn't on the water for opening day! So on Sunday after church, we went to a east central lake that I'm very familiar with. Only 5 trailers at launch parking lot, never seen that there, usually full and lined up out on the road. We fished from 2-6pm and caught only crappies. We kept 5 between 12-14", more than enough for us. We tried other spots, but no nothing was biting, wrong time of the day...but give me a break, it's my wife not my son. And virtually no new weeds growing yet. So I'm guessing a week or 2 before things get to where they should be, even here in east central MN.

A side note, the guys at the Harris bait shop said they did 1/5 the sales they normally do on opening weekend! Ouch! Lets hope they can make it up later this year!

So we had a real fine fish fry last night! I even cooked up some of those tasty little smelt to go with them...my wify wanted some for lunches for the week!

I tried a few smaller lakes around the McGregor area and ended up back on Big Sandy. It was only half open with a very cold water temp. I was able to scratch out a couple walleyes and a handfull of pike. Nothing to write home about but what the heck it was opener! I also made the night with the tastey smelt!

Fished the Sandy River and did surprisingly well, our boat caught 12 walleyes in 4 hrs all in the 14-18" range with only one that had to go back @ 19.5". We also caught 4 decent sized pike that were released. It was colder than crap out but we had lots of fun and did better than anyone else we talked to wink smiley

Was a bummer that there was still ice on the lake. Rivers is where you had to be. We didn't do as well as BD, however, we did get a few in the live well. Northerns were unbelievable. I bet we caught 50 of them... some were pretty hefty in the 10 lb. range. Still it was better then going to work smile smiley

Dave Burr Bob and Dude,

It's been a while for me(posting). I've been hard at work with a new career, and hard at work with learning my smart-phone...haha. So what happened to the MFP Walleye Opener Trophy?I think I could finally grab it for 2013, but haven't seen it posted. Burr, did u go for Sturgeon? I didn't see you this year. We did, and it was horrible...had to drive up river every day to get out of the ice. It was so bad that I booked for opener...and my o my...I can't tell a story better than the pictures show. Now Webdude, I just went to picasa and it wants me to sign up for new stuff. Would you reccomend that I follow through w/ the picasa site to upload my pics so I can put them on here, or do you have an easier method? Wheeler's Point has a pic posted of one of the trophies we got on opener, and it is my nephew. It was his first time with the guys and he pulled in a true 30" hog. It took me two days to beat it, but I managed a 30 1/2" hog. I'd love to put up some pics of our opener(and really want that 2013 title! smile smiley)...just let me know the best way. FYI...I have approx 50-60 pics, and that's not even close to how many we landed.

Catch'em Fast!

Nice job on the hogs MM. Can't wait to see the pic's!

That reminds me...did I win the 2012 Big Walleye Championship? I did post several monsters....????? It was an unbelievable year last year!!! I can't remember a opening weekend champion in a while? My son should have the 2011 championship with his 32"er.

I think Webdude should be in charge of handing out these awards. Waiting on voting always seems to get lost in the threads....
