According to field and stream, I am lucky enough to live near one of the best small mouth fishing rivers in the US. The Androscoggin River stretches from the border of New Hampshire(awesome trout, and salmon fishing on the fly) to the Merrymeeting Bay, then to the Ocean.
The thing is, 20 years ago the river so was so polluted that the fumes would peel the paint off houses. There was also this lovely brown foam for good measure.
The nice thing is the river is back to life, and TEEMING with eager small mouth, and now pike, read to annihilate a fly, or smash a lure. 50 fish days are pretty normal. Now if it wasn't covered with ice. Too thin to fish, too tick to float.

Even eminent chartered accountants are known, in their capacity as fishermen, blissfully to ignore differences between seven and ten inches, half a pound and two pounds, three fish and a dozen fish. ~ William Sherwood Fox, Silken Lines and Silver Hooks, 1954
