I have an older 90 hp evinrude v4 , 90 or 91' that every time I turn on the key, the horn siren goes off and stays on. I haven't even started it yet, and it goes off non-stop. This happened once earlier this summer, and eventually it quit. Of course when I brought it in to be looked at, they never heard a thing. Abybody got any ideas to fix it?

I will assume that this is oil injected. It may be a case of not enough oil in your reserve or if you are launching and or shallow and running the motor at a shallow or severe tilt your sensor is thinking it's not getting any oil. The other possibilities are a bad sensor or your oil injection system is going bad or getting clogged. My mercury will start beeping at me when it's real wavy, so some are real sensitive. Try firing it up totally vertical and then tilt it up gradually until oil alarm goes off...this way you may be able to pinpoint the spot that it begins to be a problem. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Yeah, I was thinking oil like DD. Is it a VRO? A beep every 30 seconds is the warning. A steady beep, every 2-3, is bad: oil isn't getting to the engine. A steady sound, I think, means the motor is overheating. I know because I had to deal with this on my Johnson VRO. Mine didn't do it every time either. I ended up having to replace the oil pump replaced though.

Good point Fishcat, if it's an overheating alarm that opens up the impeller as well. If it's clogged with weeds or something, it might not be circulating water correctly and that could be the problem as well. Make sure you have a good stream of water coming out as well, if not, shut it down before she gets too hot.

This is happening when it's cold and hasn't even been running. It's been sitting in my shed for about 4 weeks and hasn't been started. I can walk out there and turn the key on and it goes off and stays going without the motor even on. Then I can come back 10-15 minutes later and try it, and it works like it should.
