Just moved back from San Diego, and looking for some good smallmouth spots. Root River in SE MN is too far to drive, although the bite has been pretty good. Looking for a few lakes to hit, not someone's secret honeyhole. Thanks for the help.
Depending on where you are and how far you want to drive you can try the Mississippi River, pool 2 has nice smallies. Also the St. Croix is a good option. My favorite stretch in through St. Croix state park fishing from a canoe.
Other options would be Mille Lacs or many lakes up in the north and north east parts of the state.
If you've got short, stubby fingers and wear reading glasses, any relaxation you would normally derive from fly fishing is completely eliminated when you try to tie on a fly. ~ Jack Ohman, Fear of Fly Fishing, 1988
