The dam is open wider than its been in 30 years, so there's very strong current on the chain, particularly from Whitefish to Rush, and Rush to Crosslake. Of course there is current around the dam. Tons of fish were holding in Whitefish just outside the inlet to Rush in water 26 to 60 ft. deep during the day, and 20 to 50 feet at dusk and dark. Picked up numerous northern, and a couple of walleye on leeches/lindy rigs, and trolling with rapalas. (Chartreuse and natural colors seemed to work best.) Don't by pass the sunken island to the west of the Whitefish/Rush inlet where it shallows to 15 feet. Many many fish holding on all sides, usually around 30 ft., this is where we caught usually northerns. Nothing big, 3.5 pound size. Caught a catfish, and tiny northern at the entrance to the bay where the dam is. All on leeches. Some other fisherman were having good luck with suckers.
Following the weedline trolling produced some smaller northern action in Cross. Stayed out to midnight one night when the moon was full, and got skunked. It was a beautiful night however, still enjoyable, no bugs.
For the most part, weedlines are running in the 15 to 20 foot range in Cross.
Didn't fish the tight inlet between Whitefish and Cross, although I talked to a couple of guys early that said they had missed a couple..
Sure was hot, not the fishing, but the temps were ridiculous. Still a good couple of days fishing!
