I love dogfish. Up until last year, I had not caught one. I made it my goal that summer to catch one, and when I finally did...I was hooked..as it were.

So, you can imagine my delight when I pulled in this beast today.

30" 8.5 Pounds.

Nice one, they are fun to catch, anyone ever use them as a food source?

Yeah, I've heard of people eating them. Though, they advise moderation on account of the high mercury levels in their flesh. They're certainly edible, but seeing as they tend to inhabit slower moving, warmer water...they probably don't taste like Walleye.

I heard once that people use their eggs for caviar too...gross

Surprisingly no. While it certainly felt strong, I got it in in a flash, and it was netted before it could do another run.

The males have the most beautiful emerald green fins and bright red spot on the tail during spawning season. They were also the only fish that I couldn't get to spawn in my ponds or if they did something happened to the fingerlings. Too bad because the fingerlings sell for about $5 in the aquarium fish trade.
