So, I went down to Harriet Island this week, just to look around, and my wife and I had lunch on that floating restaurant. I have a couple of questions:

1. Has anyone fished the public dock there? Looks to me like it might be a decent catfish spot, with the current coming together after passing around the island. I'd expect there to be carp in there, too, and who knows what else. Looks like a guy could catch just about any of the fish that populate the river from the end of that dock. I'm pretty sure I can put a 1 oz. sinker into the middle of the channel from there, if necessary. There was nobody fishing there when I was there, and no boats tied up to the dock, either. So, I don't know if anyone ever fishes that dock.

So, if anyone has ever fished off that public dock, I'd love to hear about your success or lack of it.

2. What's the deal with the launching ramp there? It is totally trashed. The ramp looks reasonably OK, but the asphalt leading to it is about 4-6" below the metal ramp. Does anyone know when it got into this condition?

Why hasn't the Saint Paul Parks Dept repaired this ramp. It looks like it could be decent place to launch, angled as it is to launch with the current. But it's clear that it would be impossible to use as it is right now. So...where is there a ramp into that part of the river? I see a yacht club at Harriet Island. Where the heck do those folks pull out for service, etc.?

Hey MineralMan,

I searched all over to see if I could find you some info for fishing Harriet Island. I can't seem to find any information. All the threads I follow on the mississippi talk of pools (ie. pool 1, pool 2 pool 3, etc.). I think you are going to have to get on some of these and ask what pool is around Harriet to find any meaningful reports. From what I read, it appears there is a lot of good fishing being done on the rivers in MN, but I don't have many users here that fish the Mississippi.

I hate to do this, but you might want to try here...

And scroll down. There are three forums dedicated to the Mississippi. Anyone on those may be able to help you. Not sure which one though.

Harriet is on the Mississippi isn't it?

Anyway, just trying to help.

How about the Harriet Island parks department website...

There's a complete Harriet Island map on the bottom of that page. If you look on the left side of the map by the red 7 .. that's the Yacht club and you can see where they launch there.

Well, that's interesting. I guess what I'll have to do is head down there, try some things, and report back with my results.

The Park service makes something of a big deal about fishing off that public dock.

Here's what I think: It's an ideal shorefishing site, by appearances. Lots of small bait hanging around the dock. What I think I'll try is bottom-fishing for cats in the evening. I'll also try some corn for whatever carp are hanging about. Maybe a few leeches to see if I can stir up a walleye or sauger.

What else? Oh, there should be a sheephead or two down there, lots of suckers, maybe a buffalo or two.

I'll give it a try and report back.

Thanks MineralMan,

A report would be great since I cannot find any info about that location.
