That sometimes the bear tries to hunt you. Or, more specifically, mama beer tries to defend her cubs. Here's a story from Michigan where mama saw the hunter in the tree and tried to climb up after him, he was eventually forced to shoot her. Mods please hotlink, but I copied the story also.

Michigan hunter shoots, kills bear during attack in tree stand

A 49-year-old hunter in the Upper Peninsula’s Mackinac County was attacked in his tree stand Sunday evening by a female bear, suffering non-life threatening injuries before shooting and killing his attacker, state wildlife officials said.

The injured man, who lives in Shepherd and asked not to be identified, was hunting over bear bait about 8:20 p.m. when three bear cubs approached and began to work over the bait pile, said Lt. Skip Nagy. Moments later, a larger female bear arrived, spotted the hunter and climbed 10’-12’ up the tree, he said.

The hunter told officers he managed to kick the bear several times, but she resumed the attack, at which point he fired his weapon, Nagy said.

The 220 lb. bear was killed, he said.

The hunter was treated for cuts to his legs at a local hospital.

It was the second such attack in the last year; an archer, hunting deer, was also attacked his tree stand near Petoskey last October.

Nagy said bear attacks on humans are extremely rare, and usually related to a sow acting to protect cubs. There have been no fatal bear attacks in Michigan in recent memory, he said.

I've had a bear climb my tree out of curiousity before, no harm though. I've also had many bluff charges and refusing to leave a bait site so I could get down and leave at dark, that's a bit unnerving. But when I see a sow with cubs coming to my bait site, I basically start to panic. I have learned a trick to keep the sow and cubs away. Just growl softly, and then moderately loud if you have to, so that the sow hears that something is not right, and she will keep the little ones away, so that you won't have any problems. Do this before the cubs make it to the bait. The last thing you want is the cubs to get scared and climb your tree, and get above you. Then you will have trouble for sure.
