I can’t remember a season where I have fished less. It was a crazy summer in the Fishcat home and things do not appear to be slowing down as we head into fall. I haven’t wet a line in 2 months! crazy smiley

I’m hoping to get out this weekend and I’m hoping you guys can give me a heads up on the South Metro bass status. Are they getting aggressive yet? Are they moving shallow? Are they hitting topwaters?

What's the buzz? Thanks all!

I feel your pain, FishCat... I was going to try to get out last weekend, but it just didn't happen. With work and kids and every thing else going on, fishing has been something I have just been dreaming about. I haven't been out since the 4th of July weekend. crazy smiley

I haven't been out much this summer either. I did make a second trip to the BWCA in August but it was just me and my wife this time and fishing took a back seat. I did do a little casting from our campsite but in about 2 hours of fishing spread out over 4 days all I caught was a small northern.

Still an awesome trip but just not many fish.

Hey Fishcat-

This may be a few days late but here is what I have been seeing an hour to an hour and a half west of the metro.

AREAS: Lots of bass and northern in the pads/weeds/and slop. The pads are yellowing and starting to die on most of the lakes I fish. As a result I expected the fish to be moving out to deeper weeds. However, that has not been the case. Massive amounts of bluegill and young of the year fish are still using the shallow weeds as cover. That means the big guys are there since their food base is still hanging around.

NOTE: Incredible spawn this year. I suppose it was because the water level was so high and there was lots of cover for the newly spawned fish to hide in. I have been seeing massive amounts of bass spawned this year. Sometimes a whole school of 2-3 inch bass follow a lure in. Looks good for the future!

LURES: Due to the pad /weed/ slop type area I have been finding fish in I have been limited to a few basic lures.
1. Weedless Spoons. Jawbreakers, silver minnows, etc. A nice plastic trailer or spinner bait skirt has been very helpful to the presentation. It is SO COOL to see bass and northern blow up through the pads and smash the spoons!
2. Spinnerbaits. I have been going very light. 1/4 ounce at most. Put a good plastic trailer on one this small and you can keep it on top of most of the weeds and still maintain a fairly slow retrieve speed. It is critical to use a Colorado or Indiana blade. I prefer Colorado. The willow style just sinks to quickly and you can't keep it on top of the cabbage or pads.
3. Weedless Plastic. I also keep one rod rigged with a weedless plastic that I can pitch into holes, pockets, etc. It also it a good throwback option for fish that blew up on a bait but missed it. If you fish it with no weight except the plastic and the hook you can snake it along the tops of the thickest slop. When it gets to a hole or the edge let it flutter down and hold on!

That's about all I have been using. Catching lots of fish and a few nice ones. Hope this helps if it isn't to late. However, I expect with the big cold front we are predicted to get in the next few days this pattern will only be on for a few days more.

Good luck!

Thank you Fisher! Family stuff, once again, derailed my plan for playing hookie from work and getting on the water last Friday. DOH! I did have a buddy stop into town yesterday and I talked him into hitting a close by pond with me while we caught up though. Got nothing; but did have 2 nice explosions as I snaked a Trick Worm over the slop wink smiley I also saw a ton of 6-inchers following my bait back. I still have the rods in the car and should have about 60 minutes, in-between things, this evening to try and entice that one fish in the slop that dogged me yesterday!
