3rd Annual Trophy Fish Contest

This contest is open to all species of fish; anything that has gills is eligible to win.

Here is what you do… Go out and catch yourself a big fish that you think might just be a trophy for its respective species.

Once you catch the fish take a picture of yourself holding the fish. If you are a solo fisherman/woman then do your best, pictures of fish laying on the ground or on the floor of the boat are acceptable but we do prefer to have you included if possible.

After you catch your fish and have taken lots of pictures post your pictures on the MFP forum under the 2011 Trophy Fish Contest thread. Include the length and weight if you know it, when you caught it, maybe how you caught. A few details are always nice.
That’s all you need to do. You just might find yourself crowned the 2011 Trophy Fish Champion. Along with winning the title you will also win bragging rights until next year’s contest.

You might be asking yourself how a winner will be selected since crappie, walleye, pike, catfish etc will be competing against each other. Well the answer is simple. We are not looking for the longest fish or the heaviest fish we are looking for the best trophy. For example a 12 inch bluegill is one heck of a fish and is certainly a better trophy then a 20 inch walleye. The final winner might be a 50 inch muskie, or a 20 inch bass, or a 12 inch bluegill, it just depends on what fish is the best trophy for its respective species.

In order to select a winner the moderators will look at all of the pictures submitted and we will select the top 5-10 fish that we believe are trophy fish. We will then present these finalists to all of the users in order for the users to cast their vote for the winning fish.

Rules:

1. The contest begins July 6th at 12:01 am and will end on December 31st at 11:59 pm. All fish must be caught and posted during this time frame. We are all honorable people here so we will take your word that you aren’t posting an old catch.

2. All users, moderators, and website owners are eligible to win.

3. If you are unable to post a photo you may email to a moderator or Webdude and we can post it for you.

If you have any questions please let us know.

Good Luck to everyone.

Neal is on board with this nice bass. He is quoted as saying...

I didn't see a contest last year so I'm going to start it. Let's get this going webdude. This year my fiance is expecting so I have a real disadvantage.

Second bass off the dock this year was 5.5 pounds and almost 22 inches. Maybe we can start an off shore contest too. Just kidding. You guys can expect bigger than this

Really? I guess I was a little premature in my posts. Dang, I should have waited a couple days. Now I know why I haven't seen many pic's from you guys, you've been holding out for the official start of the contest to get them up. I'll call it a learning lesson. But I guess it's like the game of horse, I'll just have to prove it, and do it again. Although, I'm thinking of a different species this time, but who knows, maybe I'll have to head back to my little honey hole again.

Hey Domino Dave,

Rules can be changed. Just ask, we'll vote and maybe we could make the contest retroactive, since we are starting so late this year. I could see going back to the opener, maybe. This will be up to the users here.

What say you all?

If memory serves we began with the opener in years past. We just failed to publicize it this year.

It seems to me that would be fine to do and keep consistency with all the past years. I hate for guys to not be able to enter a fish that was caught this season just because they posted a picture before we announced the contest for 2011.

Thus, to wit: count me as a "yes" vote to allow the entry of pictures taken of fish caught after the beginning of the 2011 Minnesota Fishing Opener regardless of if they were posted before the MFP fishing contest was announced.

I would guess that using the opener makes sense to me as well. A lot of people fish the opener and maybe only a few more times during the year. And since the summer is already half over it will make it tough to come up with some good fish from this point foward. Now that the waters are starting to warm up, the fishing can slow down a lot until things cool down in the fall. As for the ending point, that could also be debated a bit. Most open water fishing ends around the middle of Oct. And most safe hard water fishing doesn't usually get going for most of the state until after the 1st. So do we want to encourage people to get out too early on unsafe ice just to get one for a contest? Maybe ending it on Oct 15th would be wise, and have a separate contest for the hard water fanatics.

Also, I have seen monikers for big walleye contest winners! When do they run?

I'm good with starting from the 2011 opener. I'd hate to have quality fish excluded.

I'm also fine with having the end date earlier to encompass just the open water season. Oct 31st seems like a good end date to me. In nov I start thinking ice so maybe a seperate ice fishing contest is in order this year.
