I was up in the BWCA 6/3-6/6 on Brule lake off the Caribou Trail. It was a short trip with my rather slow canoe so we just base camped on the far east side of Brule Lake. We did 2 day trips, one into Vernon to the east and one into Echo to the north.

The weather was great while we were there with only one day with any sort of wind.

The fishing and the bugs on the other hand were terrible. Me and my friend caught a total of 4 fish for the entire trip. 2 smallies and 2 walleye. We tried shallow, deep, rock, sand, live bait, artificial, slow, fast, etc. They just weren't having any of it.

We did notice may flies starting to pop up so I'm guessing they were feeding on the hatching bugs. We talked with 2 guys who were heading out at the same time we were and they had the same report. The only fish they caught were actually on a fly rod when they tried to match the hatch.

Luckily for us 2 of the fish we caught were pretty nice fish so we felt better about it. I caught a fat pre spawn small mouth that went at least 17 inches. I put a tape on it but I was alone at the time and couldn't get it to lay flat so the 17 inch measurement came on a curled fish. It had to be at least 4 pounds as well.

My friend caught a post spawn 22.5 inch walleye on a 5 of diamonds spoon. It just inhaled the spoon and was hooked really deep. We tried to revive it but it was a goner. It made for a great meal though. Normally I don't fillet out the cheeks because its not worth the hassle on smaller fish but this one had great silver dollar sized cheeks that just melted in your mouth.

I hated to fillet a 22 inch walleye since normally that is an immediate release but it wasn't going to make it and we were hungry. We brought food planning on having fish to eat. We didn't want another night of rice and beans.

All in all it was a great trip. Everything went exactly has planned which can be rare for a BWCA trip. Up there its always important to have a plan A, B and C since you just never know how things will work out.

Thanks for the report, nofish... That's a beautiful area up there. I've fished both Brule and Echo, though a bit earlier in the season.

What sort of luck did you have on Echo? Its a long shallow lake but the dnr survey indicates its full of eater walleye. We fished it pretty hard but we weren't able to be there during prime time.

Its a really pretty lake so its on my list to get back to.

Well... we did excellent on the lake, but this was over 20 years ago. If I remember correctly, I probably caught well over 100 a day. It was early spring, about a week after the opener. I caught most of these on a red and white daredevl... go figure.
