Anyone have some advice for me. We started fishing Mille Lacs this year at midnight on opener and had extremely good luck. We caught 13 walleye total, 5 of them keepers (or so we thought). We were checked by the DNR at the launch and one of our fish was a 1/4 inch over 18 on his board. Unfortually we were using a little tape measure in the dead of the night to measure our fish and we screwed up on this one. The officer was a real nice guy but at the same time still had to do his job, which I don't have a problem with. Being I was the owner of the boat, and didn't install a measuring board, I felt responsible to the fish and claimed that I caught it and took the fine. I am an avid walleye angler, mostly in the metro area, and feel real bad about this going on my record. Does anyone know if I should go to court for this fine and try getting them to keep it off my record. I don't have a problem paying the fine, but as much fishing I do by myself and with my kids, I'd rather this not be on my record. If you have any advice please share.

Thank You!!!

In my experience, fight it. My brother got a ticket for using lead shot one year. He had an automatic court date with that tag. He brought in 2 shells to show the judge. One lead, one steel. Both red. The judge laughed, and threw out the ticket. I recieved a ticket in the mail for hunting without a turkey stamp (mistake by the clerk selling me the liscence). That got thrown out as well. I have heard many stories where people get tickets and fight them, and later find out that there is no way that the ticket should have ever been written. I think you have a good case to fight this one as well. Who knows who caught that fish? Just because you volunteered to take the ticket, does that make the ticket valid? I'm not sure on the legalities of the matter, but a call to the county attorney couldn't hurt. I might plead my case in front of a judge to find out his opinion.

Hey nbruckelmyer,

Welcome to My Fishing Pals. Glad to have you aboard!

We also got stopped on the water by the DNR. We had one fish that was about a sixteenth of an inch shy of the slot. The officer said he would let it go. I would think that the officer could cut you a little slack, if he wanted to. Too bad... he may of seemed nice enough, but you would think that a small mistake like that and the fact you were trying to measure the fish and stay within the slot would at least get you off with a warning. It wasn't like you were blatently trying to poach fish.

I don't know; rules are rules. He got picked, probably randomly, and he had a fish that was over the limit. You can't blame the CO for doing his job.

Sorry it happened to you though nbruckelmyer. I know how frustrating it is when we try hard to obey the law, sometimes yards away from folks who are not, and we are the ones who get pinched. If you got the time, it sounds like it's worth your while to contest it.

But welcome to MFP.com. Let's hope we can talk about some great fishing days from here on out!

Oh and I've been waiting for a sale on a good measuring board myself. I'll let you know if I find one wink smiley

I use a PVC pipe cut in half length wise with an end cap on one end... and a measuring sticker on the inside. I think it works really well.
See pictures.

Coming to Woman Lake the first week of June. Is the slot limit on all lakes or just some and what is the slot 14-18? Can you keep any trophies?

nbruckelmyer, welcome to our site! Here's my couple cents...I firmly believe that if you plead your case, then you will likely come away with paying the fine, and nothing on your record(just like all the speeding tickets I used to get haha). Just go in and tell them the same story you told us. It seems true, and I feel they will see it the same way. Now, you obviously took a Walleye that was protected...so you should be responsible for that. I'd be happy to pay the fine and keep it off my record if it were me/my party. Don't want to sound like a father, but if there is question to whether or not it is legal...throw it back.

aircww, NICE MAN! I'm with Webdude on that one...I'll be making one of those too! Maybe it's time to start making your mind make you money? smile smiley

I think its a great idea that you both make one because there is just no way either one of you could use the other half! So just because I am a good guy I will take it off your hands! wink smiley Just let me know what lake I can pick it up at! wink smiley
