Hello Minnesota Fishermen...

Three Wisconsin fishermen are looking to make a trip to northern Minn this spring and are looking for advice on areas to fish, boat rentals, and places to stay. We are experienced fishermen, but have never been to Northern Minnesota. I can see there are many many lakes, but would really appreciate any advice you could give me.

I have a boat but don't necessarily want to pull it 7 hours and am thinking I would rather rent.

Like most people nowadays, I would rather not break the bank, and we don't think we need a guide.

Looking for walleye and panfish primarily, maybe some northerns.

Hello Dturriff,

Welcome to the Website.

Gonna be tough because there are a lot of great spots for fishing in Northern Minnesota. For walleye and maybe a place to rent a boat, you might want to try Lake Vermilion. For panfish, you got Lake Winnibigoshish and Upper Red Lake. Upper Red and Winnibigoshish are also great pike lakes. You also have Lake of the Woods which is great fishing.

Of course, these are the larger, more well known lakes. There are literally thousands of lakes up north that have really good fishing in them. Sometimes, I put a map of Minnesota on a wall and throw a dart and try to find new spots to fish. smile smiley

The lakes I mentioned all have guides and probably boat rentals. Pherson Lodge will rent you a boat on Vermilion. Might want to try Timbuktu Marine too, if you're into houseboats. Denny's or Becker's resorts have boats for rent on Winnibigoshis. West Wind Resort on Upper Red Lake. Lake of the Woods probably has a dozen or so... Lake of the Woods Resort and Zipple Bay Resort come to mind.

I hope this help!

Woman Lake east of Hackensack, MN is a great fishing lake with a number of lodges to choose from. Many bays and good structure. MN dnr websites has a lake finder app that will provide all the info you need. 14,000 lakes, good luck, choose wisely. Hit this one in May early June.
