New 3yr surcharges were proposed to the Legislature today by the DNR. Currently the surcharge is $5.00

New: Canoes, Kakaks, sailboats, rowing shells, paddleboats up to and including 19 feet goes to $10.50

Watercraft under 17 ft. goes to 15.00
Watercraft over 17 ft. goes to 20.00
Jet Ski goes to $20.00 everything else all goes to $20.00
These new increases are in-addition to the license fees and handling charges.

The increased AIS boat fees (4 mil) will also include an increase on non-resident licenses. These funds will be used to increase enforcement, provide more inspection and to purchase some boat cleaning equipment that could be used as education or in some cases mandatory.

A companion policy bill will be introduced shortly that gives the DNR more authority to deal with AIS, check boats for water and vegetation, and then order them to be cleaned. I assume fines will increase.

We need to strongly support more $$ for AIS education and public awareness. A behavior change needs to happen, if we want to slow the spread. Maybe this fee increase and the good it will do, will help the process along.

While I still don't agree that the dollars for AIS prevention should only come from boat/watercraft owners, I'm swimming upstream with my argument.

Big surprise, I know, but I just don't trust them to spend the money wisely. I don't really feel I have a voice in these matters but then again I don't go out of my way to be heard either.

I do however agree that education plays a huge role. The most important thing is education. I think we as outdoors enthusiasts are more educated than ever before and I think that is great. Our success in spreading awareness is making a huge impact in a great way. That said, I'm definitely not convinced that the confiscation of public dollars has contributed very much to our successes. I would stick my neck out and say sites like My Fishing Pals and other private organizations have done much more in the way of educating the public than any publicly funded venture has.

We'll see what happens with these proposals. I hope that if they are passed into law there will be transparency during the spending process so that I can shake this icky feeling that my money is being stolen for no clear reason.

Thanks for the info bassville.

Welcome to the forums john.chriss,

Currently the $2 fee on nonresident fishing licenses raises about $400,000 yearly, and Dayton proposes raising it to $5. That would bring in about a million.
