Hello all!

I am planning on visiting Minnesota next winter (late december/early january) with a buddy of mine. We want to stay on the ice and catch some walleye.

I have read some great reports of numerous different lakes and such, but I would really like to hear it from people who have been there/done that kind of thing.

I am coming from NYS, and really want to have the greatest time possible.

If you would be willing to let me know:
1) which lake
2) outfits you recommend/have used before
3) any other information that might be relavent to my time out there, please let me know.

Thanks!

If you are looking for walleye I'd go to either Upper Red Lake or Lake of the Woods. Both lakes should offer you plenty of walleye potential, even on the slow days you'll usually still catch something.

Both lakes have a lot of resorts to choose from. I personally haven't been to Lake of the Woods but a lot of others on this forum have and I'm sure they'll chime in with some info.

On Upper Red Lake I've only gone out through Cookies on Upper Red Lake. He was great to rent from and did everything a good owner should.

There are plenty of other resorts to go through, cost and availability will certainly play a part. Since you aren't looking to go until next year you have plenty of time to pick a resort and get it booked.

If I had a buddy that was coming to MN to do some icefishing, and I was in charge of taking him somewhere where he could catch some eye's. Hands down, no question about it, without a doubt, we are heading to Lake Of the Woods! Being a border water with better limits, sauger to boot, and any bite could be a trophy of a lifetime, throw in a chance at a sturgeon or a monster pike. There is no other fishery in N America that can compare. If the bite is on you could catch over a 100 fish a day, and that's not a fish tale!

And the dates you are talking about are probably better suited for ice conditions on LOW. Here in MN, you never know when the lakes will lock up and give you good ice. So plan as late as possible for better ice conditions.

There are many resorts to choose from as well up there, some include all inclusive meal plans delivered right to the fish house. Good luck and keep us posted on where you go and how you did.

Hey mikeymjr23,

Welcome to My Fishing Pals. Glad to have you aboard!

I would have to agree. LOTW has some great fishing and is considered the Walleye Capital of the World. There are also some very experienced outfitters up there that would be able to help you out. Sportman's Lodge is one that comes to mind. They post quite a few reports on the site here and are knowledgable and have a great reputation. Also you have WigWam Resort who keeps an updated blog on this site, located here...
