Hello, my name is Kent and I'm from Omaha, Nebraska. At the advice of some of the forum members they recommended I post the lake I was looking at to see what folks thought.

The lake I'm looking at is Fishtrap near Cushing. I've found Sweetwater Resort, and it appears to be a good balance between having pets (very important to my mom!), a decent sized lake but not huge, and not too bad of a drive from Omaha.

Fishingwise, northerns are our top priority, with walleyes and perch being a second choice.

We are looking at the first week of June. Any general comments about the lake/resort would be greatly appreciated.

I have never fished this lake before but there is some good info available on the MN DNR website. I've included a few links below that should be helpful.

Fish Trap lake survey

This should give you an idea of what speices are available and in what numbers. After a quick glance it looks like it should be a good walleye lake with a good variety of other species to go after as well. It also mentions a slot limit for northerns so make sure to look into that.

Fish Trap Lake Map
Here is a map of the lake, give it a look and start planning your strategy ahead of time. It should help you figure out the lake quicker. It looks like there are several spots that look good for walleye on the map. The first week of June I usually play the wind so you'll want see where the wind has been coming from. If it has been a wind of the west you'll want to start looking on the west side of island or the east shoreline, the wind will pile up warmer water in these spots and that can bring in the fish.

For pike i'd be looking toward shallower bays with some weeds. Pike will head to these bays in the spring, in early june they'll be starting to leave the bays and spread back out again so start in the shallow bays and then work your way out toward deeper water from there.

Hope this helps.

kcidz749,

Sweetwater Resort is one of the finest places I have stayed. It is not a high dollar super plush resort, but a real cabin experience resort. They are priced low compared to other resorts on the three area lakes, but they do this to stay fully booked(this is what the owners told me). The fishing is great if you know how to fish a lot of structure. The owners are amazing hosts. The cabins are furnished as well or better then your home. Everything you'll need, they have it. Fresh baked goods from the hosts is an added perk too. And they'll even do laundry for you! This is a "can't go wrong" resort.

Catch'em Fast!
