I was at a lake that I had never fished before. While hanging out at a local watering hole the day before I was going to hit the ice (something I am apt to do on a new lake), I was talking to some of the locals and they pointed out a guy that they said caught a ton of crappies every time he went out. I never got to talk to the guy, but I remembered what he looked like. I got some info as to where to fish on this lake, and headed back to where I was staying.

The next day, I headed for this bay to see if I could hook into some slabs. I drilled 4 holes and started fishing. I was using very small crappie jigs and waxies. I was there for about 2 hours, and even though they weren't exactly jumping out of the holes I had drilled, I had 4 nice slabs on the ice. Better then nothing.

About mid-morning, a guy drove his truck out on the ice and parked about a hundred yards from me. I noticed that it was the same guy who was pointed out to me as the guy who always caught a lot of crappies.

Well, to make a long story a bit shorter, he got out of his truck and started drilling holes. I don't mean just a couple of holes, he drilled about 30 of them all in about an area the size of half a football field. After the holes were drilled, he went back to his truck and grabbed a Vexilar and dropped the transducer into the first hole. He then went back to his truck and grabbed 2 MORE Vexilars and dropped them into 2 other holes. What I saw after that was pretty amazing. He would go from hole to hole with the Vexilars in them and if there was no activity, he would pick up the Vexilar and go to another hole. He kept leapfrogging from hole to hole like this 'til he obviously saw something he liked and dropped a line down. No sooner did the line reach its desired depth, then he pulled out a slab. He kept up this leapfrogging method using 2 lines and 3 Vexilars, going from hole to hole, dropping lines down and pulling up slabs. I had never seen anything like this type of fishing before. About an hour or so after he had caught his first fish, he was limited out and he packed up his stuff and left.

It was the most vigorous type of fishing I had ever seen. Here I was just sitting on my bucket, twitching my line once in a while, and here was this other guy almost running from hole to hole with his lines and Vexilars. And I mean running!. He didn't just amble from hole to hole, but moved quickly and decisively.

By the time he was done, I had another 2 slabs on the ice, a total of 6. Not bad, I thought, but this guy and the way he fished took a limit in about a third of the time it took me to get those 6.

I have since wondered if what he did was illegal in any way and have yet to see anything that says it is. He only used 2 lines. But the 3 Vexilars was something I had never seen before. Quite the way to fish if you can afford it.

I guess I don't get the 3 vexilars. You can only look at one at a time so why don't you just bring your pole and the vex and hole hop?

Ok so you have to carry the vex around a little more and you have to spend the 2 seconds to drop the transducer down the hole but on the other hand you can save yourself $600-$1000 on those other 2 vexilars. Maybe it takes you an extra 10 minutes to limit out buy hole hopping this way versus the other but my time just isn't that valuable.

It would be easier if he had a fishing buddy. wink smiley

I've seen this type of fishing myself. If none of the holes are working, they just move over to the other side of the football field and drill another 30. Works especially well when the fish are moving.

It is not illegal the last time I check with the DNR. You drill as many hole as you want to. But it got to be 10 or so yard from a existing ice house or person. If he or she is not your buddy. But that tactic is pretty good. Try it one year work awesome for panfish. But sadly it kind of hard with the bigger fish. Give it a try...

While I don't think it is illegal and anyone can fish any way he/she wants as long as it is legal, that's an awful lot of work for 10 fish. Part of the experience, to me anyway, is enjoying being on the water (ice). My work/family time is hectic enough that I fish as much to relax as anything else. Yes I want to catch something but if I wanted to work that hard I can find other things to do. Again, that's just me and my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions . . .
