Can't wait to get out to do some ice fishing. Got all my gear tuned up and ready to go. I live in Elk River, and want to know if anybody has an idea of a good place to go to by smelt. I know Cub sells it but the cost seemed high to me.

Speaking of Smelt, do you usually lay it on the bottom, just off the bottom, or anywhere in the water columb you expect, or are marking fish? I have never used smelt before, so not sure of the best practices. I am also assuming it is OK to keep a stock on hand frozen.

We use frozen smelt for Northerns using a tip up rig.

We slit open the bellies while frozen and allow the smelt to unthaw
then hook them up and place the smelt on the bottom.

Good Fishing!

Thanks for the tips. When you say at the bottom, do you mean just off the bottom, or actually laying on the bottom with slack in the line?

Have the smelt directly laying on the bottom with 1 foot of slack line
