The grouse around here seem to be making a comeback but are still hard to find. I think with less people hunting them it has helped a bit. Still too many coyotes though.
I may get out there this year to see how many I can scare up.

Every time I've asked people I've gotten the same answer... "not many birds up here this year".

Every time I go north and hunt... tons of birds. I even hit one with the truck both of the last two years.

Guess the locals just don't want us outsiders to know.

I know what you mean, I was a city folk at one time and got the same answers. It took 10 years before the locals trusted me as one of their own. Still, I have yet to hit a grouse let alone a pheasant with my truck. If you would like to see it from my point of view, I would gladly show you how many grouse are not around my area.
Yall ever get to Ottertail county?

Wally,
I've been spending a bit of time in northern mn as of late. I have been seeing a few grouse but not a lot. I'm sure this years numbers will be down a bit, but still worthy of the quest.

Where in WI will you be traveling from?
How far into the north country will you go?
What time of the year are you thinking? (After the leaves fall I hope)
Do you prefer road hunting (bump and chase), or strolling along logging trails?
All adults or kids as well?
Staying in cabin or camping?
These are all some considerations to think of before I start sending you off on some wild bird chase. But the good news is that there are a lot of good places to chase birds. A lot of nice campgrounds to spend some time in. And lots of beautiful country to enjoy as well. And some endless woods to be explored.

I personally was not hunting this weekend. However, a friend from church and his kid got 20 in a day and half this weekend. They said they were pretty thick and didn't have to work at all for them. No dog. They were hunting by Ely. Go get boys, it looks like the hatch was good this year with the mild spring.

Canvasman,

Sorry man, I wasn't trying to imply that you were being dishonest. Even if you were holding back information I would understand completely.

I guess my only point is that people need to worry less about the reports and just get out to find the birds on their own.

Also, I never hit a bird on purpose with my truck.

Last year was supposed to be the "peak" of the grouse cyle. However, the very cool spring last year really hurt the survival rate, and we were all a bit disappointed. So the expectations for this year were that it should drop a bit more. But, the early and very warm spring could have helped the survival rates, and thus a very good year could be upon us. I'm very encouraged by some of the reports that I'm hearing about. I personally have seen a few birds during my bear hunting season but nothing great. But I was looking for bears not birds. It seems like people are seeing a lot of birds and getting a fair number as well. I'm sure there will be pockets of good and bad. So opinions may vary from area to area.

The reports that you will get from the "locals" in a given area will vary greatly depending on their "vested" interest. If they own or work at a business that thrives on tourists, hunting and fishing is always good somewhere or at sometime. They need your dollars and will always be selling hope minimally. If they own a cabin or home and don't like the city folk or added traffic, they haven't seen a bird or caught a walleye since 1963. So always read between the lines to figure out the real info.

Last weekend while I was out scouting for deer hunting in the Duluth area the grouse were all over the place. I flushed 3 myself, my buddies each flushed several others and there was near constant drumming all around us.

One of the locals I was talking with said he was out for about 3 hours in the afternoon and kicked up 12 birds but only got 2. He was also working without a dog and was working some pretty thick areas so it made shooting pretty tough.

I can't speak for all areas of the state but I'll vouch for good numbers around Duluth.

BD and I were hunting about 10 miles south of Hibbing. We only saw one and heard another. But from talking to other hunters... they had seen 3 or 4 on the trails in the same area.
Happy Hunting!!!!
